About
The Raney House Museum is an example of architecture and the interpretation of life in Pre-Civil War Florida. Apalachicola was one of three ports in the Gulf of Mexico which shipped cotton, grown upriver, along with Mobile and New Orleans when "Cotton was King". The town entertained ships from foreign ports, and was very cosmopolitan. The house offers visitors a glimpse into life in "Territorial Florida" (1821-1845) with many artifacts donated by Raney Family members.

We stopped in one gloomy weather afternoon for a little bit of local history. Caty greeted us and made us feel welcome right away. She loves the town and its history and is very knowledgeable . She didn't mind answering our many questions, and because she was the town librarian, she knew all the answers. There are a lot of cool maps in the house that give a real sense of what Apalach was like "back in the day". There is no admission charge, but we recommend leaving a donation so that this place stays in business, as there aren't enough historical buildings that you can tour in the area.

We enjoyed visiting the Raney house and taking the tour. Note many of the museums are closed Sunday /Monday. The Raney house is free but they suggest a $3 donation. The Orman house nearby is also interesting as is the historic Chestnut Cemetery. There are many interesting historic houses in the area as well if you walk around.

The enthusiasm and the genuine interest of the docents was genuine and informative. We learned a lot about life in the 19th century in Florida. The format is very relaxed. The cost is suggested donation. It really is a wonderful place to start to know Apalachicola. The hardwood floors are absolutely amazing given the climate. Also enjoyed the 19th century clothing on display.

My whole family enjoyed the visit, we had folks from 74 to 11 years of age. It was great to see the home of the folks that shaped the history of the region we were visiting. The staff was fantastic, friendly and educational.

Janyce was an amazing docent and my daughter and I really enjoyed the tour! I would estimate 30-45 minutes total. You'll need to climb stairs in the house. Lots of history about the time period as well as Florida history. Highly recommend. $3 a person and books available for purchase.

Fascinating, informal, and quite delightful, the Raney House is an Apalacicola treasure. We so enjoyed the docents Katie and Linda, on respective days. Their love for local history and the house itself is unmistakable. I asked a zillion questions and each was met with an informed and enthusiastic response. Most worthwhile!

History buffs and folks interested in restored architecture of the antebellum period will delight in a tour of the Raney House Museum in Apalachicola, Florida. Built in 1838, this beautifully restored home is worth a visit. Plus, house guide, Sara McFerrin who has written a book about the home, gives a wonderful tour. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our visit and highly recommend it.

Meticulously preserved and presented. Period fixtures, furnishings, wall hangings, maps, etc. galore. Genteel docent Sara gave an informative tour with big doses of Southern hospitality. Just off Apalach's main intersection, easy parking. Thankfully, for an 1830s home, one concession to modernity: an excellent air conditioning system.

Apalachicola is definitely worth a visit...we only had one day, and so much to see had to pick one "museum" type, picked the Raney House and could not have been better...please look at the other reviews on tripadvisor as so many go into so much detail...and all is correct! A very easy way to learn so much about the history of the area, how Apalachicola started and survived, and so much information about the civil war....Sara, a speaking history book... A do not miss if you are in the area! No fee, just a donation!

How close is the hotel to a Mbta station?
Written 20 February 2015
The only MBTA I know is located about 1500 miles north in Massachusetts, known as the MA Bay Transit Authority. There are flights out of Panama City or Tallahassee! It's -15 there this AM, 35 here! Stay south! Of course, we can't do snow-diving like the crazy folks of Boston. Love their fun "enjoying" all that snow. If there is some other meaning to "Mbta" like an ATM, Apalach is advanced beyond its historical roots and actually has ATM's at various locations in town. Amazing!
