Amazing Snorkeling, Second Largest Barrier Reef in the World!
I appreciate the dedication of the People of Belize to protect this treasure. The water is not too deep for good snorkelers. Most providers have ample resources to allow even inexperienced snorkelers the chance to experience this amazing opportunity. This is not a free-snorkel area, rather you are guided. Our guide was so informative and educational. We were away from other groups and the experience was pleasant. This barrier reef is the second largest in the World and affords a wonderful experience to everyone willing to get in the water.

    Wonderful half day snorkeling excursion
We didn't stay at the hotel but booked a half day snorkeling excursion to Hol Chan and shark alley based on a recommendation from our airbnb host. Fanny was very helpful in getting our group of 6 friends booked for our excursion, and George and the rest of the guides on Tuesday afternoon/evening this week were fantastic. All of them were very funny and engaging, told us a lot of interesting historical information along the ride to the snorkeling spots. Amazing experience seeing the aquatic animal and plant life so up close, and now we can say we have swam with sharks! (And no one lost a leg! 😄) The crew gave us lots of great recommendations for food options and other activities and we put those to good use on the rest of our trip, so that was very appreciated too. Great value for the money spent, would definitely recommend an excursion through Blue Tang Inn. Did not stay at the hotel itself though.

    Snorkeling and Scuba Galore
This coral reef system is just so beautiful that words will never adequately describe it. It is an absolute must for everyone visiting Caye Caulker and/or Ambergris Caye. The tour we went on provided life jackets and a buoy for a pregnant woman that was a beginner swimmer. Didn’t see any children though so TBD on that front.

Jonathan at Belize Pro Dive Center
Gorgeous. The Belize Pro Dive Center next to the Alaia, Belize Hotel was exceptional. Big applause to Jonathan on the dive team. My first time. Was totally taken care of throughout the snorkel… made sure my mask was adjusted during the dive and was clearly, well educated on the local fish. I can’t say enough. They have much to be proud of.

Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley Tour at Ambergris Caye, Belize. Tuff E Nuff guide Rahul
Our family tour of Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley was pleasantly enhanced by our Tuff E Nuff guide, Rahul! His emphasis on safety was mirrored by his expressed interest in teaching the history of the remarkeable area and the countless fish species names and habitat. The experience exceeded our expectations in large part due to Rahul.

    30 year comparison
This is a beautiful place. I was here 30 years ago. It has not changed for the better. Yet, the country is trying hard to protect the reef. It is in far better condition than Tahiti (which is very bleached). I brought my kids (college age) because these places may disappear. It is still beautiful and lots of life. Worth the trip. Memories of diving years ago made me come back. Great diving and snorkeling.

We stayed in Caye Caulker. We went on a snorkeling excursion and one of the stop was Hol Chan Marine reserve, I was so excited to go and see what's considered the second best barrier reef.I honestly wouldn't recommend it to people who already saw a barrier reef anywhere else.
First of all the water was not really clean , while we were snorkeling we had to avoid a bunch of rubbish floating in the ocean (counting that you have to pay, you would expect it to be kept in a good condition).
Secondly there were a huge crowd of boats, apparently every tour goes there around the same time and it is over crowded (you can barely see where your tour guide is). And Thirdly you cannot go anywhere else to explore the barrier (you can only stay in that area).
And fish wise, we didn't see anything special, Only if you dive probably you can see more. The corals looked like they were all dead, and when asked how come they had no colour, the explanation was that probably was because of the the weather and that they don't know when but they would be back healed.
Really disappointed from the experience.

For diving … shallow and alot of people but lots of life. Easily saw schools of fish, moray eels, rays, nurse sharks, etc. for coral and smaller/colourful fish, go to outside the reefs or to the atolls.

What a gorgeous reef, plenty of areas of live coral and fish, including nurse sharks, southern ray, spotted eagle ray, barracudas, puffer fish, groupers, snappers, etc etc. The tour guide we had (Amigos del Mar) were excellent and the helpful in showing us the most active areas of the reserve.

Lots of Marine life, corals, invertebrates, sponges and underwater formations to see. The area has diving and snorkeling for all ability levels and is within easy boat distance from San Pedro.
