Where the upper crust calls home. . .

The tour guide for our 12-member group brought to our attention the posh gated community perched amongst hills overlooking the city. Some homes looked more like the Hearst Castle☺ The guide said this exclusive (meaning the vast majority are excluded) is known as the Beverly Hills of Guatemala City, and added that all Central American cities have such gated communities... This is a residential area where many upper class Guatemalans and diplomats live. It is gated and you need either a pass or identification but taxis can get in. It's a pleasant area shaded with trees where you can walk and jog. There's no real reason to visit unless you're dying to see how the upper crust lives. I think... More

Really posh area, gated entrance, but accessible if you're with a tour group, as I was, and your group leader has "friends". Gorgeous homes with lush landscaping, and clean, quiet streets. Locally known as "Guatemala's Beverly Hills". There are even 5 embassies in La Canada (Korea, Japan, Italy, Argentina, Colombia), which seems strange, since access to the community is restricted.... Nice houses, it used to be the best upper class residential area. Now it's gated, so only if you are going to a specific address you'll be able to go in. Near there it's the NORIA, nice little restaurant mall you can visit.

This community in zone 14, is one of the best valued in Guatemala, secure, with beautiful houses, very peacefully. I lived there for more than 15 years in the past, and always felt ok to walk very early in the morning, was not afraid (not usual in my country), to go walking hearing my music. Worth visiting, though it´s only... More

Especially for gringos, Guatemala City is not a very walkable place (lots of street crime). However, if you live close enough in Zone 14 you can go jogging or walking here. You'll probably see other joggers, and you can enjoy the trees and nice houses. Just bring your ID because they will want to check it at the entrance. Taking... More
