This day hike was challenging but so worth it. Just make sure you bring a jacket & a beanie in the morning as it's freezing when we did it and wear appropriate shoes as the path down was quite muddy for us. Highly recommended it, the view is magnificent.

It was so far the best hike (due to the view on the top) but also the hardest hike. If you are well in shape you can make it in 2 hours. You do not need a guide but good to have a mobile with GPS and the track on it bc there are two places, where you could get... More

Hiking his volcano Santa Maria requires a lot of energy and good physical conditions because it is very steep. It takes up to 4 hours to reach the summit. During the hike, climbers can look the Valle de Palujonoj, Cerro Quemado, Volcan Palujonoj the city of Quetzaltenango. From the summit hikers can look the huge and small eruptions from Santiaguito... Now I know what they mean with a "difficult" hike! Although the hike is amazing, it is difficult! Especially when you arrive at the top and there is no view at all - too cloudy. I can't say the hike was the best ever, but it is a nice one. That's for sure! It was more difficult than Acatenango, even... More

Great trip. Spent the night up there. Looked around and saw lightning, eruptions and fireworks down in Xela all at the same time. Cold and windy at night. Bring warm gear. Hike is steep but fine. Sure the locals do it in sandals. Sunrise outstanding.

This was the highlight of my time in Xela. Start as early as possible so that you have a better chance of seeing santiaguito erupt. It's a challenging climb up that we did in three hours with a few breaks along the way for snacks and water. It's possible to do without a guide if you're a DIY traveler.

We did this hike without a guide and the track was fairly easy. Walk up the riverbed and turn left when it comes to a end, it's a pretty obvious track although we did go left to early on another track that lead us to a dead end farm but when we walked down and found the correct track it... More

We love hiking so we were looking forward to climb Santa Maria but words can't describe how dissapointed we were afterwards. The trail itself was covered with trash and once at the top it even got worse. Plastic bottles, glass, cardboard boxes,.. you name it. We were also surprised to see that amost every rock was 'signed' with graffiti. The... More

One of the highlights of my trip so far. Despite what people attached to the tourist industrt might tell you, you can actually do this very easily yourself without a guide and using public transport. I spent only Q4 in total for this trip and had a great time, got to take my time with he hikd, and stop and... More

I had a great experience with QueztalTrekkers. I decided to do the full moon trekking and we had a very clear sky at the top and we could see santiaguito in eruption more than 3 times. The trekking is hard, 5 hours going up. So be prepared to do it! I wasn't prepared but the guides motivate all the group... More
