Very interesting drive, But half of it was closed.

Half of the road is closed because of fumes from the caldera. You can drive to the Jagger museum on one side. And just past the entrance to the Chain of Craters Road. The area... read more

Half of the road is closed because of fumes from the caldera. You can drive to the Jagger museum on one side. And just past the entrance to the Chain of Craters Road. The area that is open encompasses all of the major sites to see. The Thurston Lava tube is a quick trip that is very interesting. Your first... More

Long drive to coast and arch. The scenery was lava flow and reminds me of another planet. We were not able to get very near to the fire hose but could see the steam. We were able to get a good photo op of the natural arch.

There were a number of stopping points on the drive and it was different place to anything else that changes as you drive and knowing you are so close to an active volcano. Go to the Jagger Museum and the Steam vents and any other spot that provides parking.

The drive round the rim has a number of places where you can stop and look at the view. the are often pools of steam and smoke venting from holes in the ground. A very interesting place.

The crater rim drive exists inside the volcano national park, so will require park admission. The drive itself is very nice. You will drive through several different environments including forest, prior lava flow, craters, seaside. There are several different places to stop along the way. Each offering a closer look at some of the sites.

Ordinarily a really long ride round the park, part of the road (past Jagger Museum) is closed and has been for a long time due to a buildup of noxious gases. You can access other sections of the road as they remain open. Drive slowly as there are many places to stop and see things you will never find in... More

If you go in the evening, you can see the glow of the lava in the pit. I wish that we could all get closer to the lava, though. You see the smoke but not the actual lava!

Until you see (in person) how much devastation an eruption can cause, you can't really appreciate the violence or the magnitude of such an event. We walked and drove around for hours. The crater is still smoldering. If you walk down to the floor of the crater, you can still feel the warmth when you place your hand on the... More

If driving is your thing and hiking seems daunting, then definitely take time driving this. We drove it but only out of necessity to get to various trail heads. Part of the drive is still closed due to poor air quality given the current lava eruption happening in the caldera. If you're pressed for time, it definitely provides quick access... More
