Good snorkeling for those who don't want a boat ride.

We snorkeled at 4 other beaches and this was the best! The water was clear, not oily. There were all sorts of fish and several turtles. Have fun!

Arrived about 9 and the parking area was more than half full, and it filled up by 10. Lots of campers and families, but the beach was not crowded. The snorkeling was very good to the right of the beach, for a long ways. Several arches under water and a good variety of fish. Some dolphins showed up, but stayed... More

Hidden down a narrow winding road is this gem. Fine Black sand and sparse crowds. Large variety of fish and coral to view. Worth the drive.

DO NOT BOOK HERE. LAST MINUTE CANCELLATIONS. NO APOLOGIES OR HELP FINDING NEW ACCOMMODATIONS. RUINED TWO DAYS OF OUR TRIP. I booked a two night stay for 15 students and faculty traveling from Maryland for a spring break travel study and paid the full $661.50 almost two months in advance. I received a booking confirmation in January, and another 'reminder'... More

Camping - getting there is easy enough, just slow down if you're coming from Kona and look for the exit sign just past the school zone. Its a 2 mile drive down a switchback road with a few areas you need to slowww riiight doowwwn. Parking is ,inimal so get there early in the day (seperate area for campers). The... More

If you picture yourself camping on the black sand beach by the ocean, this isn't the place. You are camping with as many as 50 other folks with the same ideas. We were there last year when the beach was closed because of dengue fever and it looked wonderful. There was no one there at the time, which is what... More

A lovely, off the beaten track gray sand beach in South Kona. Popular for camping and snorkeling. Clean and well maintained. Shade and picnic tables available. Though the parking was tight, the beach did not feel crowded...great snorkeling, sighted whales and enjoyed the peace while reading my book. Check it out!

Hubby (67) and myself (62) snorkeled here. We read about this park in a guidebook. A little tricky to find; the drive to the park itself is >2 miles on a one-lane (but asphalted) drive. Parking is at a minimum. However, we loved it here. The local citizens have taken over the care of the park. There are restrooms, outdoor... More

This was our favorite beach and was the only place in Hawaii that we went to twice. It was not crowded and about half the people there seemed to be locals instead of tourists. Our first time there the water was very calm for snorkeling. I saw a small octopus. The second time the waves were bigger and we enjoyed... More
