This was the main hike we wanted to do when visiting Kauai. We were well prepared for the mud conditions and rock scrambling, river crossings and rain forest atmosphere. What we were not prepared for was the amazing site and time spent at the falls. We left at 800 am from the trail head and returned by 230pm. Truly an... More

I just completed a tour of Kauai, Japan, and the national parks in the American Southwest, and Kalalau was the most impressive activity of the multi-week trip. We got permits and went past the two mile mark to see both waterfalls - 18 miles in all. Took us from dawn until just after dark. Stunning views, and sightings of wild... More

Just finished the hike with my boyfriend this morning. It's by no means a walk in the park especially with the trail being muddy and slippery after a rain last night and again during our hike. But it all adds to the experience. Tips: - Go early. We got there around 6 am and it was still dark so we... More

This was without a doubt, MY FAVORITE day on Kauai. Arriving at 8:30am, parking was easy, but I imagine it would be difficult if you arrive any later. Even with a bit of overcast, the views along this trail were absolutely breath taking. It was a bit challenging in certain areas (going across rocky, running water, slippery rocks and some... More

Completely worth the hike with mud or no mud. Don't slip off the trail though.... The beach at the end is great and you have the option to hike another two miles to the falls. A yes to see the coast!

We've visited on Kauai six times and we've hiked to Hanakapi'ai Beach of Kalalau Trail six times. If you're hiking in the afternoon and coming back to trailhead around sunset time you'll see beautiful golden Na Pali Coastline!

So much advice about this trail discourages people who are out of shape, older, or overweight to not do the trail. I would suggest going to the trail to see for yourself and see if you feel comfortable making it to the 1/2 mile point and the deciding for yourself what you would like to do. We saw children and... Trail has many excellent vistas. Destination (Kalalau valley after 11mi) is beautiful. The highlights: several river crossing (clean and warm water), fruits along the trail and in the valley, waterfall for shower, warm ocean (but with huge waves), nice people. Trail is muddy on many sections, but I guess it's part of the experience. Rain is not a problem: it's... More

We hiked to the waterfall, if you do definitely go for a swim. Cold but worth it! The beach is lovely too but we spent less time here to save time for the round trip hike. I wish I would have used hikers that could get wet in the river, lots of rock hopping on this hike. Be prepared to... More
