The river flows from the headwaters on Mt. Waialeale through the Hanalei NWR under the Kuhio highway, then alongside the road into Hanalei, on into the ocean close to Hanalei Pier. In the town of Hanalei, numerous kayak and paddleboard rentals allow you to explore the river. The Hanalei Valley lookout provides a nice view of the river and valley.

From the Hanalei Lookout in Princeville you can see the waterfalls in the mountains towards the interior of the island. As you travel down the steep grade of the twisting roadway into the Hanalei valley below, you can see the river carrying water away from the mountains, along the big taro farm, and under the one-way bridge. As you drive... More

This is. Beautiful river in the heart of Kauai. Do not swim in any of the rivers, but paddle boarding and kayaking are both just fine!

So much fun to kayak and paddle board on this smooth river. Beautiful setting and easy to get to from the St. Regis beach. Definitely do it at least once. We went twice because we were board at the St. Regis pool.

Rented kayaks & SUP & paddled up Hanalei River. Return trip we were able to pull out kayaks & SUP, have lunch in Hanalei Town, then finished the day paddling out to the mouth of the river at Hanalei Bay. Beach/Bay was super nice, small waves & clear sandy bottom. We were told it was about a 45 minute paddle... More

The possibility of Leptospirosis aside, the Hanalei River is amazing and worth spending a couples hours paddling on. There are a few rental places at the mouth of the river near the Hanalei beach park. $40-50 for the day. I paddle somewhat fast and went for 1.5 hours up stream before I bottomed out and had to turn back. The... More

Spent 10 days at Hanalei and we were warned by locals not to swim in any of the rivers! Due to the wild boars and thousands of chickens all the rivers in Kauai are considered to carry bacterium leptospirosis and the danger of staph infections. They need to address this problem A SAP! We would not return to this beautiful... More

Hanalei is less busy than Waimea and you can benefit from the added serenity. From the bay, it is about an hour effort to get to the Hanalei bridge; I assume a lot of people must turning back at this point. But the nicest part of the river start 15 minutes upstream after the bridge, where the river narrows and... More

Judy and I will never forget sharing a kayak on the Hanalei River, a quiet meandering stream between Princeville and the town of Hanalei on Kauai. The scenery is peaceful and inviting, and if you're boat-averse and otherwise fit there's a nice trail alongside the river if you prefer to hike. A dog was doing just that, walking upstream on...
