The teens loved the waterfalls, and traffic seemed to move consistently. The food trucks along the way are costly. The view is beautiful. You have to trust your driver to enjoy this road. It requires great driver focus. The hike after Hana is long, and...More

This highway should not be driven by yourself. Take a tour. This will allow you to see the beauty all around you as you are driven by a guide that knows all the good places to stop for picture taking. The foliage that surrounds you...More

We drove the Road to Hana ourselves. I highly recommend downloading an audio tour if you are not going with a guide. We used the Shaka Guide and the Road to Hana tour cost $6. It was well worth it. Bring a car charger for...More

Don't believe any of the positive reviews. They are just people not admitting to themselves how boring this is. It's a long, slow, and winding drive. It rains most of the time. The pay off at the state park is not worth it. Beware it's...More

The Road to Hana lives up to its reputation of being a totally amazing thing to do, as well as being infamous for all the curves, one-lane bridges and blind corners. We did it with a private tour and that was the best decision we...More

The road to Hana trip is stunning and beautiful. There are pros and cons to choosing a guide for this trip versus driving on your own. Choose a guide that is a native Hawaiian to hear historical stories and tidbits throughout the trip. The road...More

Get a good guidebook to plot your waterfall stops. Road is wind-y, but in very good condition. This was a lovely drive, and on the bucket list. Gas up before you go. There are a few stops for food stands along the way, many selling...More

What a ride! You want a car that handles well and a convertible on a sunny day is a must. I was one of those crazy drivers some of the others talked about. The wife gave me a kiss and said if we die, she...More

A long day. 12 hours start to finish. That said a worthwhile tour. Larry, our guide/driver was outstanding. Plenty of stops along the way to view some island scenery.

Traveled this road years ago and would have given it a 5 back then. Our experience this time was not good. I guess you could say you just need to know a lot about the conditions before you go. There are so many beautiful things...More

Is a sedan adequate for driving here or is a SUV recommended? I usually hate goig on tours so I wanted to drive on my own.

An SUV isn't necessary as the road is all paved. You want a car with maneuverability. Better to choose a small sedan or compact that corners well. If you park anywhere, don't leave any valuables in your car as break-ins are... More
For the RTH, is there a better day to go? Will be there M-F in July. Also, what type of car is best/safest to drive there? Lastly - which app, Gypsy or Shaka? Thank you!

I would go on a weekday, and not Friday. Second, we had a jeep. Last, I think we used Gypsy and it was very, very helpful! I didn't mention it in my review but I should have! Have fun!
Hello - is the Road to Hana one lane in each direction or just one lane from start to finish? We heard that Mile 39 is currently closed and wanted to see if there was an option to turn back around before then. Thanks!

Aloha! It is not one way, the road is two-way, though sometimes it feels otherwise! There are signs where you should yield to traffic when the road narrows. Sometimes there are closures at different points due to extremely... More
