Visited April 15, 2017, Niece's step daughter (age 9) got slammed by a rogue wave that came out of nowhere, she saw it and tried to get away, but was pulled under and tumbled in the wave, her dad ran and went to grab her out of the water, and luckily she ended up being okay, but it was very... This place is one of my favorite places on earth. I love the beach and the large surf break. It can be a bit anxious with young children or people who are not familiar with the ocean as the break can get pretty big and has the potential to be deadly. As like no as your cognizant of this it... More

Such an amazing and beautiful beach! We strolled in the late afternoon, early evening and watched a spectacular sunset. The beach is clean, big, and blue! Beautiful scenery and nice areas to explore. You'll have to find your way to Little Beach if you're so inclined for the 'bare' necessities.

Makena is awesome! Huge beach, medium sized waves, (depending on weather) even when busy you can find a spot, nice sand, great views of Kahoolawe, Molokini, lifeguards, great spot !

Malena Beach is breathtakingly beautiful - a broad sweep of beach, gorgeous aqua blue waters, interesting surf you could watch all day, plenty of space for folks to find their own roomy spot. It is also inexplicably dangerous. The beach is very steep and the surf is unrelenting, even when the waves don't look high. Please Google "Makena Beach accidents"... More

This beach is really sweet, lots of walking, great swimming, waves are present but you can walk out a bit and swim in shallow water.

While the beach itself if fairly nice and included some trees for shade, I was very disappointed in the lack of facilities. This was a state park and I expected to find washrooms and showers as there are at most other beaches. The only facilities were portable outhouses which badly needed to be emptied and had no toilet paper. The... More

It is a great beach. So relaxing to just soak some sun and if you wake up early enough you can see turtles. We stayed at the hotel near by so it had beach access.

Makena Beach is breathtaking. The surf was pretty rough & good for body boarding. We saw a few turtles here. Downfall: no alcohol is permitted on Hawaii beaches. So know that in advance. We began the short walk down the path with our cooler only to read a big sign that said "No Alcoholic Beverages". It was humorous, actually, because... More

You really have to visit Makena if you're on the south shore of Maui. It is stunning, beautiful and alluring. BUT as with any Maui beach, BE CAREFUL - the surf is unpredictable and powerful. I donated a pair of eyeglasses to the ocean there, because I forgot for a moment, how surprising and intense the waves can be. And... More
