Beautiful views from this lookout. Easy to access from car park with plenty of parking. Access for prams or wheelchairs. It was very windy however lovely clear day and views for miles. Definitely worth stopping for a photo op.

One of the good views in Oahu. We stopped here to enjoy the view and took some pictures. It's free and we didn't have issue to find a parking spot when we were there in the morning.

We stopped along each lookout on the southside of the island, and this one was our favorite. No camera filter was needed to capture the vivid shades of blue. We went late in the afternoon and there was only one other couple there. Worth the drive and stop.

Breathtakingly beautiful! Words cannot describe the views and pictures do not do it justice. Grab a fresh coconut from a local vendor and enjoy the views and the sound of the waves.

O'ahu is a picture taking paradise. There is so much to see that while this is a nice spot, you could give this a pass on not miss anything.

This is one of the most beautiful views on Oahu. The water is such a brilliant blue. The southeast coast is very pretty…..

We found this during my research on places to stop on a drive around the island. It is just past the pull off for the Makapuu lighthouse trail. The parking lot is on the smaller side, but there was a decent turn around of people coming and going so it seemed to work out while we were there. You cannot see the lighthouse from here as it is around the corner, but it still has a pleasant view of the coastline down the island. There are signs in the parking lot warning of break ins. Please be sure to take your bags with you on your person, don’t leave anything that looks valuable in plain sight, and lock your doors. So please be alert and aware of your surroundings. Overall it is a great place to take in some of the beauty of the island as you make your way around.

This is a no brainer when you are driving through this side of the island! We actually drove twice and stopped each time just to relax and take in the views! First time we were driving north so we only stopped here, but the second time we actually were coming from the north to arrive literally next door at the Makapuu Lighthouse Trail - you enter them via separate roads from the main road - they have separate parking lots.

Neither parking lot has a restroom or any vendors for food/water so come prepared if if you are also planning to do the hike (not challenging as much as tiring, the surface is perfectly paved but it's a constant incline and it wears you out, worth it though - see separate review)

TIP: as in many places in Oahu there are sign of "frequent theft" so make sure to not get carried away with the views and lock your car/hide away the valuables!

Makapuʻu Lookout, Waimanalo, Oahu
What an amazing lookout with panoramic views of the coastline, small islands just off the coast, and Makapu‘u Point Lighthouse. Not to be missed if you are travelling along the Windward coast (East Shore) of Oahu.

Makapu’u Point Wayside is on a cliff in Kawai State Scenic Shoreline and offers views of the southeastern coastline including a beach park, sea cliffs, and two islands. Makapu’u means “bulging eye” in Hawaiian and is so called because of a Tahitian god who lived in a cave in the area and had eight eyes. From the lookout, you can see Makapu’u Beach, and Manana and Kaohikaipu Islands. Mānana is better known as Rabbit Island. The name Rabbit Island came about because the area was once a rabbit-raising farm. All rabbits were removed in 1994 because they were destroying the fragile ecosystem. The island is now a protected bird sanctuary and permission is needed to set foot on it. Kaohikaipu, the smaller of the two, is a seabird sanctuary and permission is needed to visit here. A sign at the overlook states the area is known for migrating humpback whales which we did not see when we were there. It is said that a many as 10,000 humpback birth and nurse the calves.
