- Soudamini MBengaluru, India1,602 contributionsPalace with intricate designNice palace, surrounded by a huge garden. Visited it only the main entrance. The palace was first built in the 13th century, later on additions were made from 17th to 20th century. The main entrance visible from outside is very colorful with beautiful designs. From the palace one can walk upto Jewish quarters, which dates back to the 15th century and an interesting place to visitVisited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 March 2024
- amanda5805Duncan, Canada7,560 contributionsNoteworthy landmark but only if you are in the areaThe Royal Palace of Fez, is an impressive and historically significant site in the city. Its grand golden gates and intricate mosaic work are truly a sight to behold. The palace holds a special place in Moroccan history and culture as a residence for the king when he visits Fez. Our guide mentioned the king does not spend very much time here. Last time he was here it was during covid. That being said, while it's definitely worth stopping by if you're in the area, I wouldn't recommend going out of your way just to see it. You can only admire the gates, as the palace is not open to the public. This limits the overall experience, making it more of a quick photo opportunity rather than a place to explore in depth.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 July 2024
- Kino JZaragoza, Spain391 contributionsNice doors of the Royal Palace that leave you wanting to see the interior, which you can not visitToo bad you can not visit any part of the interior of the Palace. The doors are very nice and, certainly, you have to see them. They are also right next to the Jewish quarter which is also worth visiting. Before going to Fez I read several reviews that advised to go first thing in the morning so you don't find them full of tourists. However we stayed in the morning and there were quite a lot of people, as all the tour groups stop there. We came back a second time in the late afternoon and... we were totally alone, with no one, and we were able to photograph the doors in total comfort and in much softer light to better appreciate the colors and details. That’s the best advice: visit them in the late afternoon, before nightfall begins.Visited November 2024Travelled with familyWritten 8 November 2024

This is the building facade you see featuring on the covers of most of the guidebooks on Morocco. Though entry to the building, built on 80 hectares, is prohibited for the public still nearly all tourists visit this corner of Fez el Jedid to be photographed in front of the grand ceremonial Palace Gateway. You can see Bab L’Makhzan standing proudly on Place des Alaouites. It has fabulous blue green zellij mosaic tilework done on arches over brass covered doors, with huge brass knockers. Inside the palace there are various elaborate pavilions, sumptuous guest houses and majestic gardens.

Royal Palace is located in Fes El-Jdid neighborhood, near the Medina of this imperial city, in Morocco. Nowadays it is not possible to visit the palace, because it is used for Royal Family, but you can see the big walls, which surrounds the palace, and the wonderful golden gate, which is closed, but it is impressive. Really visiting the palace should be an incredible experience.

The palace is located in the new city of fes and it is very beautiful from outside. Entry to the palace was not allowed at the time of visit. There is very well planned beautiful garden in front of the main entrance gate which makes it even more beautiful. I hope, the palace will be open for public view some day.

I did not give it more stars because it is not open to the public. Nevertheless, the Royal Palace of Fez is well known for its golden gates and its highly ornate exterior wall. The palace is in very close proximity to the Mellah and Medina, so it should be visited at the same time.

We passed by this place while driving from the Train Station to my riad inside the medina. Our taxi driver, in his broken English, told us to visit before it leaving Fes. As most TA reviewers are saying, only the outside areas can be visited at this time. Excellent background for photo shoots!

Very pretty but facade is all u will see, if you are walking to the gardens you can see this on the same trip. Really no need for a guide..most sites in Fes easily found with $1 cab rides!! Their “Uber” system is great!

The royal palace is outside the Medina and can only be viewed from the outside. The entrance door is a beautiful photo opportunity, but unfortunately also a tourist magnet. There are also always clever tour guides who stand with their group directly in front of the gate, which makes it very difficult to get a good photo. Still worth a photo stop.

The Royal Palace is certainly part of Fez - but there is nothing to see here. We chose the palace as the starting point for a small city tour. We stood around in front of the large gates of the palace, took photos "as required" and walked a few steps around the large forecourt. But unfortunately there was nothing more to see. You can't go inside or into the gardens.
There is nothing to see here except the large gold-blue entrance gates. And to be honest, you can see that from the street even when you take a taxi.
What a pity.

The Royal Palace is wonderful to view from the outside, great entrances, spectacular tile work, but no access to the inside. When taking photos, do not try to take them with the guards!
The gardens are beautiful to walk in, great layout and many different species of trees, palms and other growth. Worth a short visit.

Beautiful Palace. The Palace is stunning! The designs are so colorful and intricate. It’s truly amazing. There are so many designs along with fives large gold doors. The palace is a must visit and your Fes itinerary is definitely not complete without it. I highly recommend!

Hello, just a quick question as everywhere I’ve read to “arrive early” for photo opportunities as it can get very busy. Nowhere states how early. I was wondering what sort of time people have visited the gates, and how busy it is at these times?
Thank you

We were at the Royal Palace in Fez at about 9 am in October. There were no crowds and we were able to take a few excellent pictures. Understand that there is no public access to the Royal Palace and you are limited to pictures of the main gate. There is a smaller gate to the left of the plaza where there are guards. In Morocco, taking pictures of anyone in uniform is strongly discouraged. The two exceptions are at the Royal Palace in Rabat and at the Mausoleum of Hassan II in Rabat.
