I enjoyed my experience here and read through every detail of the slavery in Stone Town (I love reading history so I could be bias here). The entrance fee is $5 USD which is very reasonable. They do ask women to cover themselves (they will provide a long cloth) if they are wearing short shorts. The place also has a... More

Tour was very poor, not much to see and little or no artifacts - it is a shame considering the topic it deals with. The church is a joke if you have been to Europe. In fairness the information posters in the main hall were good at conveying the horrors of slavery. Fine if you have an hour or so... More

You cannot visit Zanzibar and ignore the dark side of this Island. Learnt about the slave trade and so much more. Strongly recommended!

There's a guide to take you through the old slave chambers and church who talks a bit about Zanzibar's horrific slave trade history; after the tour ends, there are several very thorough signs about the history of the Pacific slave trade that went through Zanzibar and how it still impacts the island today. I learned a lot.

just a short walk in the back of StoneTown and well worth your time. It's only about $5.00 per person to get in and although it's not very big it's packed with history. Note that you do not need a guide to follow you, if you prefer to go on your own you can do so.

This complex is close to the famous Darajani market, about 5 min walk, so you can easily combine it with that one. The Cathedral, which is pretty big and very nice, was built by the British just on the spot where the old slave market used to be. Below the altar, there's a circular marble, pointing the place where the... More

It is a combination ticket: you visit the place where slaves were kept before selling, the monument, english church, photo exhibition through slave history; all escorted by a well informed guide. Reserve some time for this. From there you can visit Stonetown, have a lunch and/or go back to enjoy the beach somewhere around Zanzibar. I recommend a good driver... More
