Popped in whilst having a look around Maputo on a Sunday afternoon. The small fort is worth popping your head in for a peruse of the walls. Was asked for a small donation to enter and then left to it. Was there for no more than 15 minutes. Interesting enough but not worth a special trip.

One of the highlights of Maputo. This was possibly the best operated tourist attraction. It had all of the displays in good condition, it was clean, the bathrooms were clean. If you follow the guide it will take you through the history of the colonial Mozambique, definitely a must do there in Maputo

1787 Portuguese fortress in the centre of Maputo. Very interesting items inside the grounds and buildings worth a look. Can walk up to the top of the fortress walls for a good look over the city. And, there are a lot of cannons.

The Fortaleza is the property of the University Eduardo Mondlane and is very well maintained. It is regularly rented out for exhibitions, fairs or events. It is a safe haven where it is pleasant to stop when visiting the hectic city of Maputo. Unfortunately, there is very little literature and no guide available at the site. A leaflet is given... If you're in the area it's worth a quick visit especially if you're into history. If you're not in the area and you're not super into history you could skip this.

This is an old fortress that was rebuilt some time ago. It is a nice place to visit and I loved to take the kids and play pirates (it is actually allowed). It also has a few colonial statues that were removed from different places around town after independence.

The challenge is everything was in Portuguese and we could not read and understand some of the struggles that our people went through,I hope someone will realize that soon for tourists to also understand.

Well kept, this fort is right next to the harbor. There are some interesting art pieces in the fort. The ramparts afford good views of downtown and a bit of the port. Like so much else in Maputo, it could be so much more. Still worth a visit, though.

First it is important to know this monument is only about 60 years old. It was built in the 50's as a Monument in honour of Kaulza de Arriaga and as a symbol of Portuguese occupation of Mozambique designed by the late Mesquita, Arch. It is built near the place of the original Fortress that was the stronghold of the... More

The history of native peoples is intimately tied to colonial Portugal and the atrocities perpetrated upon the endemic population by the European conquerors, The sculptures, tomb of the first president, and artwork in the fort are impressive and tell the tale of oppression.
