Also called Kumari Bahal, this fascinating palace is home to a virgin girl who is worshipped as the goddess Durga in human form. She can sometimes be glimpsed at her windows.

The Kumari (the living goddess, who is a small girl) gives her appearance only for a few minutes, so make sure you go at the right time, in case you want to see her.

At the junction of Durbar and Basantapur squares, this red brick, three storey 18th century building has an inside courtyard that is enclosed by beautifully carved wooden balconies and windows, just a magnificent example of the Nepalese gift for woodwork.

The guides are not particularly knowledgeable so take a guidebook with you. Lovely examples of wood carving and the windows are unbelievably intricate. Some of the sections can be viewed only from the outside due to earthquake damage.

We did not see the Living Goddess, but we did sense her presence. There is a great opportunity here to learn about culture and perseverance. The building is reinforced and repairs are progressing slowly. The magic, majesty and spirituality is palpable.

Make sure you know the timing to visit this place as i believe you can get a glimpse of the Kumari at certain times only daily. The architecture buildingscaround here are beautiful tho still shows signs of damage from 2015 earthquakes.

But it might do soon... the building was obviously seriously damaged by the earthquake which is sad but keeping it upright with a few beams looks dangerous.

If you want to get a glimpse of the sweet little Goddess, then this is a must see place. She comes every few mins and is a delight to watch.

The props against the outer walls are a give away. The whole place looks as though it is about to fall down. Unfortunately.

You have to experience this amazing place and the underlying tradition of The Living Goddess, whom I was fortunate enough to glimpse on her brief appearance at the appointed window. Such a beautiful child, one can see why she was chosen for this amazing honour.

Though the earthquake had partially destroyed the richness and ancient craftsmanship, whats left behind can still be appreciated by the visitor. This is the home of the "living goddess", a unique Nepali traditional where a pre pubescent female child is nominated from a particular sect...More
