My visit was December 2016. There was renovation work going on at the time. I found it to be very interesting as I wondered around reading the information and looking at all the items on display. Some videos to watch also. Free entry which is always a winner. Any bags etc you put into a locker.

Just north of Wat Jed, this museum is currently undergoing some renovation and the entrance is from the back. The exhibitions are well presented, with excellent parallel texts in Thai and English. There are also some good electronic displays of the region's history. Photography without flash is permitted.

About 3.5 km north of the old city and a pleasant walk. Free entry into this museum. I would recommend at least an hour to stroll through the exhibits which are reasonably well explained in English sub title. Not a mammoth display of items but a diverse cross section of themes with explanatory notes on older settlements.

Minor renovations going on, but still free. Not as many artifacts as you might be used to, but very good english dioramas and videos. The information sheets in english look like they were translated by google translate or something similar, but still informative. Nice cool place to dodge the afternoon heat once you get there. I rode a bike and... More

I was surprised that it was free entry (I saw no signs of active renovation -- maybe they are done). Great introduction to the history of the Lanna kingdom in northern Thailand and the birth of Chiang Mai as a city. The video diaramas were excellent, held my attention. Also fascinated by the birth and spread of different forms of... More

The museum continues to be under renovation. The admission was free due to renovation. The exhibits include information about the history of Chiang Mai with artifacts from archeological sites as well as dioramas with audio explanations in both Thai and English. This helps to shape your understanding of how Chiang Mai has developed over time.

The museum is undergoing renovations, so you can go in what remains for free. However, you will hear loud demolition works the whole time in there. The exhibits are OK (lot of writing) and tell you about how Chiang Mai came to be. We found that if you just watch the videos they say exactly the same as the signs... More

It's great that there's renovation going in this museum. It is in need to upgrade the exhibits. Despite being a bit run down, it's a nice interlude to appreciate Chiang Mai's history. The second floor was being renovated when we visited. The ground floor did offer a glimpse of the city's historical and geographical significance. It was from this visit... More

no special things to see, a bit far away from the old town, and you can hardly recognize it on the highway

If you are a history buff then it will be well worth your time. It is smaller than it's counterpart in Bangkok but the gardens make it worthwhile
