Ha Long Bay, in the Gulf of Tonkin, includes some 1,600 islands and islets, forming a spectacular seascape of limestone pillars. Because of their precipitous nature, most of the islands are uninhabited and unaffected by a human presence. The site's outstanding scenic beauty is complemented by its great biological interest. The outstanding value of the property is centered around the drowned limestone karst landforms, displaying spectacular pillars with a variety of coastal erosional features such as arches and caves which form a majestic natural scenery. The repeated regression and transgression of the sea on the limestone karst over geological time has produced a mature landscape of clusters of conical peaks and isolated towers which were modified by sea invasion, adding an extra elemant to the process of lateral undercutting of the limstone towers and islands.

Halong Bay its one of the most incredibles things i´ve ever seen. The experience is like a trip to another world, reminds me of some comicbooks. Please, buy your ticket directly form the window at the pier, do not talk to street sellers or tour office: they simpli charge you 4 times the cost. We paid to a guy who... More

We went on a half day tour of the bay and the cave and were thoroughly gobsmacked. Our guide, Vu, was entertaining and knowledgeable and spoke with a clear pride about his home area. There was something wonderful to see wherever we looked, the site of the latest King Kong film, was especially interesting. It was spectacular under cloudy skies,... More

This was the absolute highlight of our Trip. Louis was a FANTASTIC guide. He was sweet, knowledgeable, and a lot of fun to spend a few days with. I highly recommend this tour to anyone traveling through the area.

Unfortunately there was constant low cloud obscuring the tops of about a third of the islands and drizzle throughout our visit. This diminished the impact but not the unique natural beauty of the area.It was sensible that all the tour ships were similar in size and were painted white. If you do go swimming be prepared for cold water. Our participant... More

Plan a day or two on Halong Bay if you are visiting North Vietnam. This is a geological wonder of the world, in my opinion. We did an overnight cruise, which was sufficient for us. We visited a fishing village, walked into a cave that was hundreds of years old and otherwise had a lovely time cruising amongst all the... More

Although now very touristy, it's really a must see when visiting Vietnam. The scenery around the 3000 islands is most unusual. We came by road from Hanoi, takes best part of 4 hours depending on the traffic, not much to see en-route bar more building sites and large industrial complexes.

While it is three hours from Hanoi to the bay by car, and four if you're on a shared shuttle it is worth the trip if you spend a night on a cruise, or in a local hotel and do a day cruise. We did a two night cruise and I would say that the decision to spend that much... More
