About
This central market is the symbol and soul of Saigon, with over 1,500 booths trading wholesale and retail items ranging from food and apparel to fabric and cosmetics. There are four main gates and 12 entrances—with the main entrance located near the big clock tower. Here, you can spot interesting souvenir picks like embroidered wallets, lacquerware and silk scarves.
If you’re a coffee lover, locals would recommend homegrown brands like Trung Nguyen, Metrang, Wakeup and Mr. Viet Coffee. When hungry, treat yourself to a comforting bowl of pho, a dragon fruit smoothie and Hue cake for dessert.

What a great place ! This place is an experience in itself, lots of fun, bargaining with the people, especially the women. They will be very aggressive and want you to buy more than one item. There are places to eat there also. If you go to Saigon you must go to the market at least once. You will never forget it !

Way too much harassment. I would not go back because I found the experience too stressful. Not just the vendors inside but all around as well. Can someone tell them that people like me would like to shop there but the aggressive selling is just too off putting.

I wouldn't recommend a visit unless you're *desperate* for last minute souvenirs. This is a tourist market. I can't comment on the food vendors that are there, but with the other sections I lasted about five minutes before I had to get out.
Many (many) of the vendors are aggressive. Not just subtly, but obnoxiously. I don't think they quite realize that if any of them just left me alone for 10 seconds I would look at their stalls and probably buy something to take home. The part though that I really couldn't stand was how many thought it was their right to try and grab my arm to get me to buy from them, which made me leave asap.
If that sounds fun to you, go ahead, but it's not likely you're getting a deal either. At the non fixed price stalls they are asking severely inflated prices, and even negotiating to less than half will have you paying more than what you would elsewhere.
I respect people trying to make a living, but this one was one of my least favourite places in Vietnam. Other days may be different, but the day I was there really soured me on the experience.

If you live to shop till you drop dead this is the place to go to. A organised market with a contrast of shops. First who are fixed price and then others who quote more than four times the actual rate. So bargain hard to save your money.
You can buy bags. Clothes, lacquerware, wooden carvings, purses, souvenirs, tableware, decorative and top brand fakes from Louis Vuitton to Prada to YSL. You name it and get it there.
Well it is said the quality is bad which I cannot comment till we use the stuff we bought but I guess good shopping experience.
Remember they can quote a two million Dong and give it to you for 400000. Not always as other places you can get barked at by rabid sellers. Watch the fun and have fun

Worst market in Vietnam- do yourself a favour and avoid- this is just a tourist trap, the city is full of fabulous, authentic markets- there is zero need to go to this one. We stumbled on it by accident and couldn’t get out of there fast enough. The vendors here are not typical of the Vietnamese people- it will only leave a bad taste in your mouth

As you would probably expect from a market.
Sweaty
Smelly
Aggressive stall holders
Prices weren't that cheap, really, even with haggling.
Unfortunately, the meat section gives a smell that lingers throught the whole market.

All the answers above seem reasonable except the older man from Perth who was rude and demeaning. We travelers are all different ages and levels of experience.
If you do not feel comfortable walking about maybe you can hire a local who wants to make some money to do your shopping. You can find through the front desk. Take a picture of Your empty tube or draw a picture. Ask front desk for guidance on price of shopper and product. Make sure you have firm understanding with shopper in advance about money. Good luck.

The only other market we visited was near the pink church and the 7-storey pagoda. Don't know what it was called. Check it on a local map.

Not really, and regardless I believe you'd be better off elsewhere.
Saigon has plenty of shops like this you can find. Ben Tanh market isn't a place I would recommend for this.
Do you open on february 5?
Well traveled

Most likely not. That’s almost like Dec 25th. It will be a ghost town in Ho Chi Minh those days.
