A monument to the Soviet Union and their help in defeating Fascism and Nazism, or at least Japanese and Chinese imperialism (I think).
Impressive to see, and the view you get of the city, or at least this part of the city is impressive.
A very well structured monument, very colourful and just oozes history and metaphors so typical of Soviet and communist art.
Worth a look.
Can take the long way up like me, or the short way up with the lift from the near by department store.
Recommended, definitely worth a look.

It is a monument at the top of the hill so don't get yourself too worked up with expectations. The Soviet style mural is good and the view across UB is very good. A tip: You can avoid most of the steps up to it by entering the nearby shopping centre and taking a lift to the top which has a walk-way across to it.

Quite a hike up the stairs to the monument. The mosaic images celebrating the long relationship between Mongolia and the USSR are well done. From the hilltop is a great view of Ulaanbaatar.

This monument has an interesting story. Quite a climb up the stairs but it’s absolutely worth it for the magic views at this time of the year. Take some cash as there are some locally made arts and crafts along the way which make great gifts or souvenirs

This is the best place to get a view of Ulaanbaatar city. The monument itself is a tiled mural of Russian-Mongolian friendship. There are about 6oo steps to get there, but you can get a taxi and only have to walk 200. It is still quite a hike.

This was a very interesting monument- especially if you have visited other similar ones in the former Soviet Union countries. The mosaics are well maintained so it looks stunning. The view is great but you are further from the centre so the view is mostly of apartment blocks with the centre of the city and mountains in the distance. This was one of my favourite sites in Ulaanbaatar.

I would not recommend visiting this monument in the winter. Yeah, I did it but I didn't have a choice. If you have trouble with stairs this might be a problem for you. I have bad knees but forced myself anyway.
I am glad I did, the view of the city is fabulous!
But it was freaking cold! Negative whatever in both fahrenheit and celsius!
It is a very nice monument to fallen soldiers, but it would be more pleasant in the summer! I was there at night, highly recommended by most people.
On your way down the stairs, stop at Zaisan Hill Complex. They have some nice (expensive) shops, and the Ruby Room restaurant that I have also reviewed.
Zaisan Monument is a must-see tourist attraction.

Requires a good climbing of stairs... has a great view of the city and worth the climb, even in -25' C weather.

On a very cold (-18 degrees F below zero) and snowy day in November 2019, I decided to visit the Zaisan Memorial located in the southern area of the Mongolian capital of Ulaanbaatar. After an hour of driving through snow packed streets, heavy traffic we finally arrived at the Memorial site. After driving to the uppermost parking lot on the hill, we were confronted with a climb of three hundred steps before reaching the monument and mural. Be advised that the stairs are covered in snow and ice and that several steps are broken. Use extreme caution. Also be sure to dress in warm clothing. Those who make the climb are rewarded with a panoramic view of the entire city of Ulaanbaatar in the valley below, as well as the Tuul River flowing past the city. The monument was created in 1966 to honor the Mongolian and Soviet soldiers killed in World War II. The memorial features a circular (22 meter) memorial with painting that depicts scenes of friendship between the USSR and Mongolia. The mural depicts scenes such as Soviet support for Mongolia's independence declaration in 1921, the defeat of the Japanese Kwantung Army by the Soviets at Khalhkin Gol on the Mongolian border in 1939, victory over Nazi Germany and peacetime achievements such as Soviet space flights including the flight of Soyuz 39 which carried the first Mongolian (Jugderdemidiin Gurragchaa) into space, The stirring socialist realism imagery done with Soviet mosaics and reliefs, are extremely colorful but reflect the Soviet style of art in which the Russian are superior to everyone else and everything goes to Mother Russia. Stalin and Lenin are included in the memorial. In 2003, a tank memorial, which previously had been located on a crossroads between Zaisan and the city center, was moved to the foot of the hill. It features a Soviet T34 tank from a brigade paid for by the Mongolian people. The tank memorial honors those Mongolian soldiers who made the journey from Moscow (1943) to Berlin (1945). On the outside of the circular wall, one can see replicas of medals and military orders given to Mongolian and Russian soldiers for their services. Restrooms are available, but on this particular trip they were out of order. The Monument is impressive and it reflects the friendship between the Russian & Mongolian people. If you visit, I would recommend spending 2-3 hours at the site,
