I stopped here on an off day of my Mongolian tour. The monastery is listed as one of the sites to visit in Ulaanbaatar. Perhaps because I had spent time in the Gobi Desert and with the Eagle Hunters, I did not find the monastery all that interesting or exciting. It is a good place to visit to kill a little time while in Ulaanbaatar. However, your time is better spent at the Chinggis Khaan Museum.

Yes, yes, yes. Awe inspiring.
Inside the monastery. Thank monks.
Alway go to temples, churches and synagogues.
Look at the pics, but ya gotta see in real life.

I finally found it on Apple Maps when I searched for monestry. It’s a 25 min walk from blue sky hotel.

Funny all the signs at a temple saying beware of pickpockets!

Impressive temple and close to monastery. With the very tall statue is the centre piece, it felt quite intimate and special to be inside this temple

The main monastery in Ulaanbaatar. Interesting, and the statues are impressive. No interpretation given- brush up on your Tibetan Buddhism before you go. Only go clockwise if you circumambulate.

We visited to Gandan monastery in the morning. It is such as spectacular huge statue. It is surrounded by small 1000 buddhas. In order to experience the monks chanting, you should definitely go there in the morning. This statue is a great art of work.

The Migjid Janraisig statue is not located 1.5 m north west of the Sukhbaatar Square as shown on city maps and on the internet. If you attempt to follow the maps, you will land up behind the Metro Mall in a construction zone. It is actually located approximately 6 km to the west of the Square and is located on the Gandantegchinlen Monastery grounds in the Bayangol district, 16th khoroo in Ulaanbaatar city. Migjid Janraisig Sum is a 26.5-meter-high statue of Avalokiteśvara. (It is the tallest indoor statue in the world). The statue is encrusted with 2,286 precious stones and is gilded with gold leaf. The statue has had an interesting life over the years. Dismantled, stolen and rebuilt. If one visits the Gandantegchinlen Monastery one will come face to face with this huge statue. Well worth the visit. Just be aware of your surroundings. Pickpockets abound around the area. Also you will be charge a photographic fee if you attempt to take photos of the statue.

The huge standing Buddha is definitely the highlight of a very nice temple complex. It was interesting to see the differences in Mongolian Buddhism on display in the temples from other temples we have visited and the statue certainly inspired awe. A nice and tranquil place to visit in the midst of but away from the hustle and bustle of UB.
