I knew I wanted to see the interior and a show…Dance and music of Mongolia.
It featured indigenous peoples and ethnic groups of Mongolia. The show was great and the interior is fantastic!

Directly across the street from Sukhbaaar Square, one will observe a stunning pink and white building with columns in the front. This is the Mongolian State Academic of Theatre of Opera and Ballet. It was established on 15 May 1963 under the direction of the Central Committee of Mongolian Public Revolution Party. Its purpose was to "bring culture to the Mongolian people". Over the years the repertoire of the State Academic Theater of Opera and Ballet has expanded to more than 100 national and world classical works including 56 ballets (as well as several Mongolian ballets) and 54 operas. At present the theatre employees 270 artists, staff and administrators. On 23 November 2019, I was able to obtain a ticket for that night opera, "Madam Butterfly". Madam Butterfly is an opera set in 1904 Japan, has three acts with 34 arias, duets, trios, choruses, etc. I must admit that opera and ballet are not in my repertoire of exciting things to do. The young lady at the Tourist Information Center encouraged me to attend and I was very hesitant about this venue. After seeing the performance, I glad that I had the opportunity to see a world class performance. The music, customs, and performance was outstanding. Well worth the T 68,000 ($25.00 US) ticket price. The acoustic in the theater are top notch and every seat provides an excellent view of the stage. I'm still not an opera fan but I would highly encourage everyone to visit to this Theater while in Mongolia if possible. It is a remarkable experience.

The Mongolian State Academic Theater of Opera and Ballet is one of several fabulous building situated around Sukhbaatar/Chinggis Khan Square. Both the exterior and interior will wow any visitor! Performances are frequent and very reasonably priced.

I usually steer clear of "folkloric" shows aimed squarely at tourists, but knowing nothing about Mongolia song and dance, decided to take a chance.
The show was a medley of different genres, from singing to dancing to orchestral music. The throat singing was like nothing I had heard before, quite haunting and other-worldly, but a little difficult to truly appreciate with just a brief performance.
The orchestra was extremely professional and beautifully turned out in exquisite national costume, as well as traditional music they did a rendition of Queen's "We are the Champions", quite an achievement given the nature of their instruments!
The whole show ran without an interval for a little over an hour, with recorded voiceovers in English to introduce each act.

Whether it is a grand performance of 'Eugen Onegin' or 'Aida' or the breathtaking ballet 'Swan Lake,' you are going to enjoy the experience of visiting this theatre. This imposing neoclassical building is to the east of Sukhbataar Square and you cannot miss the pink building. It not a large hall but the acoustics are excellent and almost every seat, whether US$4 (cheapest) or US$12 (costliest), allows you excellent visual access to the stage. You can buy tickets online at ticket.mn but would have to activate the card for 'e-commerce' if you use a Mongolian card.
The theatre opened in 1963 with Tchaikovsky's Eugen Onegin. Prior to that, the Russians had already been sending hundreds of musicians, poets, writers, composers and dancers from Mongolia to Russia to train at the best theaters and conservatories. However, after the end of communism in the early 90's, the 500-seat theatre also died a quiet death, as government funding dried up. It is only in the last 10 years that funding has been resumed and all shows now run to full houses. Other than a handful of students sent to Russia every year to train, Ulaanbaatar now has a few ballet schools, mostly branches of privately run The Royal Ballet Academy, set up by Tuguldur Badral.
If you are in the city, check out ticket.mn for the programme schedule. Whether it's a performance in Mongolian, or Russian, or German, or Italian, you will not regret the visit.

It would not matter if one does not understand the language, go to be imbued by song, dance and yes music, Mongolian style! In grand surrounding and for the price of a song/ Tickets are easily available on line. We caught the opera on Chinggis Khan. It was interesting if not great. A real Mongolian experience. They locals brought their school going kids for the evening show but they are all surprisingly well behaved . Lots of young people there too.

This is a fantastic Mongolian cultural experience in a nutshell. From singing to folklore you get an overview of the culture of this vast and diversified country -- from the mountains to the deserts. Well worth the money and time.
This attraction is rather popular during peak season so do make reservations or go early to get your tickets

Really enjoyed watching a wonderful Mongolian cultural show in the beautiful Russian-built theatre. However, like many of the theatres, roads and buildings in UB (as the locals affectionately call Ulaanbaatar), they are sadly neglected and really need some serious TLC. Mongolia is a wonderful, diverse country but it has a LONG way to go before it is ready to take on the hordes of western tourists who are now queuing up to access this country which is one of the last frontiers on earth. Loved my experience throughout Mongolia bouncing around in Four Wheel Drives. You don't have to worry about poor road signage or even the world's worst roads because, most of the time, when you are travelling around remote areas outside of UB, there ISN'T ANY ROADS! We were travelling across open fields of oozing mud, across the grassy Steppes (no road in site) dodging huge herds of Yaks, cattle, semi-wild horses and suicidal goats who absolutely REFUSED to move out of the way of our speeding 4WD. We travelled for more than 23 days around Mongolia visiting the spectacular Gobi Desert, the hauntingly beautiful singing sand dunes of Khongoryn Els, Tsenkher Jiguur Hot Springs, the amazing Ongiin Monastery complex and right up to the freezing forests on the Siberian border at Lake Khovsgol which is te largest tributary stream of the Lake Baikal (the deepest freshwater lake in the world in nearby Siberia). The people of Mongolia are absolutely amazing - welcoming us all into their Gers for traditional Mongolian snacks and a taste of their powerful Fermented Mare's Milk (which, I suspect, doubles as paint stripper). Altogether an unforgettable journey - but do it NOW before the Caucasian Hordes turn this beautiful country into another over-visited and loved-to-death Paris or Prague!

My wife and I have about 5 days in Ulaanbaatar. My wife doesn't appreciate cultural activities as much as I do and will tolerate 1 show. Which cultural show do you think better represents the culture of Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia: the Tumen Ekh Ensemble, or the Mongolian State Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet? We will be there from October 1-7. Are there any blackout dates then? Thanks in advance for your advice! I had no success trying to visit their websites as I live in China.

I am staying in Ulan Bator 6-12 July. How can I find out before I arrive what (if anything!) is on at the theatre, please?
