This a 3-story building located NOT near anything. The top floor was the $8 museum (nothing in english) and featured dusty displays of various gems that weren't very interesting. The place looks old and outdated. Once I came with my mom who are a big gem lover but I just didn't get it. They sell things similar to gems in Bogyoke market and I think the latter got a better price and choices. Not impressed.

There is NO official Gem Museums in Sri Lanka, there are gem shops doing business as Gem Museums. There are reputable gem shops that (1) don't have a markup to pay tourist guides (it's about 30%) and Tuk Tuk... More

I was taken here on an organised tour by jetwing. The museum turned out to be a scam to get you to buy fake gems. The tour company gets a commission.

You need to be a gemologist to know what you are buying. Luckily I didn't indulge and only bought a few stones that I had planned on making into pieces. I bought a turquoise stone that turned out to be fake! So disappointed. Watch the video and leave!

We were taken there with our scammer and I am pretty sure he got some money for taking us there. If you know what you are doing and you know you don't want to buy anything then stay strong and prepare for them being super pushy. We didn't want anything and they kept showing us different jewellery and offering better... More
