This enormous palace was the Imperial residence of Ottoman sultans for almost 400 years. Although much of the palace is not accessible, the daily tours of the Harem are of great interest to tourists.

Fantastic visit, some amazing artifacts. One word of advice. You have to pay for entrance. Rather than paying for individual passes. You can buy a 5 day pass that allows you to visit all the main places of interest. Works out much cheaper.

This is accesible from 2 areas ,one side from Sultahnamet and the other end near Gulhane Park entrance.I prefer the one from Sultahnamet as it's a downhill walk as opposed to walking up.Very good Ottoman castle architecture example. The detail on some places are good to see you won't be disappointed

If you are interested, even slightly, in Ottoman history you MUST visit Topkapi Palace. The tour is wonderful and you learn so much about the Ottoman empire's history and you really get to experience the royal court's way of decadent living while touring the palace. The architecture is amazing, the art and mosaics are beautiful and there is not an... More

I was expecting something like the Alhambra in Granada but it is very different. To be honest, I don't think the artwork here is as fine as in the Alhambra and the layout is different, so that the gardens are more incorporated into the buildings but it is a fascinating experience nonetheless (and despite the fact that, when we visited,... Give yourself at least half a day to visit Topkapi. We went early in the day before the crowds which gave us the opportunity to soak up the opulence and beauty before the noise of the crowds. There are plenty of place to sit and rest and just take it all in. There is a coffee shop with views of... More

When i went there were renovations going on at the topkapi palace. Even then i really enjoyed my visit. But personally more than the palace it was the palace gardens that took my breath away. It was a beautiful place to walk and the tulips were awesome. U need to give this time so that u can enjoy strollung around... More

Our guide told us that Topkapi palace has become a major pilgrimage site as the museum houses strands of the Prophet Mohammed's beard and a footprint. The terrace has a beautiful view to take a break after the long walk to the palace as there is a large garden between the Hagia Irene and the first courtyard. Other than the... More

Staying in Sultanahmet

Neighbourhood Profile
Sultanahmet
With so many unmissable attractions within a mere stroll of each other – and all set around the site of an ancient Byzantine hippodrome – Sultanahmet is an overwhelmingly popular tourist destination, and a prime location for visitors to be wowed on a truly epic scale. Beyond the wonders of the Blue Mosque, the Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, and more, this relatively small area of Istanbul somehow manages to retain an air of peace and calm. It offers visitors a significantly less celebrated but nonetheless pleasant network of quaint lanes and side streets, majestic panoramas of the Bosphorus, and an impressive assortment of accommodation options for all budgets and tastes.
