Different Art- Ottoman Calligraphy This was love from the very early start- Calligraphy. When first I visited Istanbul in 1981 I noticed the hidden treasures of this great art- Ottoman Calligraphy. For Arabic speakers it was a nice challenge and opportunity to read these scripts (which is sometimes proved to be a very difficult challenge). I remember when my colleague... More

My daughter and I took a two-hour class with Nilgün, as Alp translated and brought us tea and refreshments. Both of us had previously studied the Arabic language, as well as italic calligraphy, but using the traditional tools and getting expert instruction really brought this beautiful form of writing to life for us. The two hours passed quickly and pleasantly.

I had a great class with Nilgün (with Alp as translator) a classically trained calligrapher in several styles. She was patient and kind and offered to teach a variety of hands. I wanted to learn something that would give me a good basis for learning more so she recommended riqa. As with any calligraphy, learning basic riqa requires a lot... More

I took a Latin style calligraphy lesson with my instructor Tolga. I was able to learn the basic alphabet in one lesson! Everyone was very friendly and kind I would definitely come back again. Located in the beautiful Sultanahmet, this studio gave me an ideal experience of art in Istanbul.

I had an incredible time as a western trained calligrapher, unlearning some of my habits to learn arabic calligraphy. My instructor, Betül, was patient and skilled as she helped me understand the forms, angles and nuances of the arabic hand. I can't explain how much this enhanced my experience of Istanbul and my desire to better understand the forms in... More

I was recently on vacation in Istanbul and only thought about an Ottomon calligraphy present for a family member on my second to last day in town. I found Alp's calligraphy service via a Google search and decided to use them since they were based in Istanbul. Even though we were over 6,000 miles away from each other, we communicated... More

Staying in Sultanahmet

Neighbourhood Profile
With so many unmissable attractions within a mere stroll of each other – and all set around the site of an ancient Byzantine hippodrome – Sultanahmet is an overwhelmingly popular tourist destination, and a prime location for visitors to be wowed on a truly epic scale. Beyond the wonders of the Blue Mosque, the Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, and more, this relatively small area of Istanbul somehow manages to retain an air of peace and calm. It offers visitors a significantly less celebrated but nonetheless pleasant network of quaint lanes and side streets, majestic panoramas of the Bosphorus, and an impressive assortment of accommodation options for all budgets and tastes.
