- betteskidBoston, Massachusetts1,310 contributionsNeat castle - nice to visitThis castle is high up in the hills and is in pretty good condition. It was originally a monastery and then rebuilt as a castle in the 10th century (or so). You can go through the several floors all the way to the top where there are nice views of the area. Most of the rooms are empty now, but you do get a sense of the scale of the building and learn a bit about the history of the place.Visited December 2022Written 17 December 2022
- Deb CAdelaide, Australia220 contributionsWorth a visitGreat views from the top - could still see the snow on the sides of the hills (from the week before) in some spots, even though the sun was out! A great little 12th century castle, well preserved and lots of steps and uphill walking so be prepared. We were part of a tour group, so had a guide who knew the history, Small museum to check out on the way in or out.Visited February 2023Written 13 March 2023
- zuvBucharest, Romania27,129 contributionsWorth a short visitA very old castle, not very well preserved, not very impressive. All you can see are a few empty halls, a tiny archaeological museum, plus the (bland) panorama of the region, seen from the terrace above. It is worth a visit of a maximum of one hour.Visited March 2023Travelled soloWritten 5 April 2023
- 214stjAuckland Central, New Zealand118 contributionsGreat Views from the TopNice little castle with outstanding views of the surrounding countryside. There isn't much to see of the castle itself other than the small museum. Entry is included with the Jordan Pass and there is limited parking next to the gate. Additional parking is located a short walk down the (rather steep) hill. It's a bit far out of the way to drive if you're coming from Jerash or Amman like we did. In retrospect, we wouldn't drive out of our way to see it but rather would have gone as part of a guided tour. The views were not worth the gauntlet of bad drivers and narrow roads to reach it.Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 April 2023
- Chris YSt. Albans, United Kingdom264 contributionsA castle with many steps !A castle dating from the 12th Century in the course of restoration. The castle is located at the top of Mount Auf so has great views of the Jordan Valley. Many steps, so may not be everyone's choice. Children under 10 will love it although there are some places where they should be watch carefully. Not many signs to guide you round - we went to investigate what appeared to be a cellar only to find a dark corner which led to wells and bathing area. Excellent place to visit if you like old castles. Watch out for the open and closing hours - the place shut up shop bang-on 16:30 on the day of our visit, earlier than most other sites. Limited car park spaces.Visited April 2023Written 18 April 2023

But the castle is small, maybe an hour's worth. They have got some environmental solar project going on over here..entrance is covered by Jordan Pass..Visited May 2023Written 25 May 2023

It's a castle with nice views; inside you will find a display of weapons and artifacts. It's not a must-see but worth a stop if you're already in the area.Visited December 2022Travelled with familyWritten 9 July 2023
- Maria0MagdalenaLondon, United Kingdom467 contributionsGreat addition to a trip to JerashWe went to Ajloun as part of a day trip from Amman. We started off in As Salt, where we had breakfast and a stroll, then drove to Ajloun, after that Jerash, and an early evening stroll around downtown Amman. It's a great castle, really fired up the kids' imagination. Unlike many places in Jordan, it has a good number of explanatory plaques all over the venue, which really aids the experience.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 27 October 2023

12th century muslim castle set on elevated position on a hill top, a strategically significant fortress against crusaders. Great views across Jordan valley and surrounding dessert worthy of a stop over.

If you park at the beginning of the hill, there is a cafetaria which has a great view as well after visting the fort. The fort itself is a bit of a climb to the entrance. Nice views and restored inside.

We did this as part of larger tour. It wouldn’t have been something I would normally have done but it was actually pretty impressive

There are a few castles in Jordan and Ajloun is one of the best preserved. I stopped there a few times with my clients and people like this place quite a lot.

As our itinerary didn’t take in other fortress castles we were pleased to travel from Jerash for the afternoon and see this one. The drive takes in some steep streets and small towns where the driving standards leave a lot to be desired. Approaching Ajloun, the landscape becomes greener with forests and olive groves before the castle looms on the top of the hill.
We parked at the official car park at the base of the hill, as indicated, although there was space nearer the gate thus minimising the climb.
The castle is on many levels and interesting enough and the view from the battlements is worth the effort.
