There were great written and visual explanations (in Spanish) of the historical stages/influences of South American art, but I would have liked to see more variety than what ended up being 90% religious icon paintings.

Patience finally paid off as the National Museum of Art opened its doors after a lengthy renovation. This is a good museum, which you will enjoy more if you take a tour. I went because I was determined to see the sculpture of 20c Bolivian artist Marina Nuñez del Prado. That alone was worth the visit. This is just off... More

We never got inside the museum because they insist on seeing some sort of photo identity. They asked for a passport or driving licence.

The National Museum of Art is the best example of historical exposition in Bolivia. The cultural collection conduct the visitor during various centuries of the history the Country, with its contradictions and peculiarities. Really exciting!

This is the third time I have been to La Paz (over the past ten years) and this is the third time I have tried to visit this museum during its normal (stated) opening days and hours. And this is the third time I was told -- upon arrival -- that "the museum will not be open today because of... More

You can buy a ticket to visit 3 museas in La Paz: San Fransico monastery, Museo de Etnografia y Folklore and Museo Nacional de Arte. Do not buy such a ticket, because the Museo Nacional de Arte is closed for the moment, due to big renovationworks!!

I was so pleasantly surprised by the collection here. It was lovely. Glad I took the time (don't need more than 1.5-2 hours) to visit this museum just steps from the main square and cathedral.

The museum is small but delightful. Most of the art is a mix of Bolivia’s history, coca culture and their recent indigenous revolution. Just outside the museum there are plenty of vendors that sell food, souvenirs and a variety of merchandise (electronics, clothes, etc). There is a small entrance fee but there are days when it is free, usually weekends.

I hoped that this would be a bit more varied but really almost all of the art is oil paintings with a religious theme and not my cup of tea at all.
