It's not a really safe area with the place nearby. What is interesting is that this train was the first railway of South America thanks to England I guess. Abandonned for a long time. But they keep it without maintenance. Sad. Some events below sometimes.

Up and Coming Museum
Oct 2019
Everyone loves going back in time marveling at the old marvels like old trains. The old Central train station in Asuncion has been converted to a museum dedicated to the railroad of Paraguay. Many of the old railroad artifacts from bygone years are on display at the Museo de la Estacion Central del Ferrocarril in Asuncion. Entrance is only 10,000 Guaranis. While we were visiting, we had the opportunity to chat with a couple of retired railroad employees who remember the way it was "back in the day." If you are looking to see huge collection of antique locomotives and railroad cars, you may be in for a disappointment. At present, there is only one full-sized train on display inside the museum. Feel free to board this train from yesteryear... and study what it must have been like to ride a pufferbelly back in the early 20th Century.

I believe the museum is off to a fine running start, but still could use more exhibits and modernization of the facility. Check it out... the museum is well-worth the entrance fee. The train station is situated near the heart of the city, and can be thoroughly enjoyed inside a 2-hour period.

THE LORE OF TRAIN TRAVEL
Oct 2019
Such places allow you to step back in time. If you like train travel, you can revel even more. Train travel is a distant memory in the country [at least at the moment]. Old records are on display and various pieces. The best part is the chance to board a dining car [being set up for lunch] and a refurbished sleeping car with a separate lounge area. A half hour could see the place in depth.

Could be Better
Sep 2019
This old train station carries a lot of history. There are no longer any trains in Paraguay but that may change some day. This museum gives a history of the trains as well as other odds and ends of industry. That's the problem. There are a lot of odds and ends without a coherent story. But the museum is interesting and informative. There are only two train cars and an engine (under renovation and not accessible). I wish that there had been more trains.

Worth a visit

It is unlikely that I would have gone here had my guide not recommended it and taken me there. I am glad that I went. The trains have long gone so the old station is now a museum-not only of railways in Paraguay but also of 19th century British railway engineering. Plus some old rolling stock.

Old rr station

The train system has been shut down for some time. The old depot for the capital is now a museum. Interesting old railroad and telegraph equipment is on display. The track holds a dining car that can be walked through. A restored mid 19th century locomotive is also on view.

once a station, now a museum
Nov 2017
Starting in 1861 Paraguay built a railway line from Asuncion to Encarnación, a distance of 376km. In 2006 the train was given up in favour of road and river transport. Thus the former railway station of Asuncion was turned into a museum, one of the attractions along Avenida Mariscal Lopez, but closed, when I treid to visit.

I’m not a huge fan of trains or the technology around it but there’s a lot to see here if you’re interested in history. It Would be great if they showed a short video somewhere to show you the history, or even something to read, but there’s not much and you just end up looking at objects and having to Wikipedia the history of Paraguayan train lines so you can appreciate it more.

Don't miss this if you like railroads

The history of railroads in Paraguay is very interesting, and this small museum captures the flavor of its times. Definitely worth a visit if you're in downtown Asuncion and have any interest in railroads, or even if you don't

Amazing step back in time
Aug 2017 • Couples
The old central railway station is a time capsule of history of the railways in Paraguay since the 1850's. Although it's a bit run down through lack of funds most probably, it is well worth the visit. Just stare at the exhibits and let your imagination wander to a different era.
