Amazing Resting Place
Feb 2021 • Solo
This building is absolutely beautiful, and the fact that this is where they have most historical figures buried, adds to its historical significance. A must do while touring around Asunción!

Must See in Asuncion
Dec 2019 • Couples
English-only speaking couple. We would have missed the abundance of history and background of this country without our great guide, Marco. Book a city tour. Adopt the country for a day; and do not miss stopping here.

HOMAGE TO HEROES
Oct 2019
The national mausoleum of the country is an architectural gem. It was opened in 1936, housing the great leaders of Paraguay and an unknown soldier. In Napoleonic fashion, you bow your head. There are several statues around the outside walls. The altar-like area is very impressive and ornate. The stained glass depicts the colours on the Paraguayan flag. Two guards stand outside the main door. There is a changing of the guard ceremony which you might be able to catch. The place was very powerful.

Military History
Aug 2019
Early August we have been visiting the Panteon Nacional, with friends from Germany first time after its renovation. Today it looks much better in particular now focussing on the important items.

Worthy of Les Invalides
Sep 2019
This Panteon was modeled after Les Invalides in Paris. Although not nearly as grand, it is beautifully done. The building itself is in great condition. The guards in front are photogenic. The history is interesting. Well worth a visit.

Worth a visit
Feb 2019 • Solo
This small memorial building right in the centre of the city contains the remains of a number of Paraguayan leaders and generals within a classic building with a guard of honour at the entrance.

Learn About Paraguayan History
Mar 2019 • Business
Learn about local history. Best to go with the guided tour (free but tip recommended) from the tourist office in historic center. Also go for the changing of the guard.

Memorial to Paraguayan heroes
Feb 2019 • Couples
This small Greek style building memorializes the heroes of the country. Statues of the heroes of independence are on the main floor, surrounding a railing which allows views of the caskets below. Soldiers at attention in full dress uniforms guard the entry.

a mausoleum for the country's heroes
Nov 2017 • Solo
A landmark in downtown Asunción is the National Pantheon ('Panteón' in Spanish), where the country's so-called 'heroes', often just important politicians like the two Lopez or Estigarribia, have found their final resting place,.

The building, designed by an Italian architect, was started in 1863 but due to the Paraguayan War only finished more than 70 years later. It is a neoclassical construction with a cupola, which was under renovation, when I visited in November 2017. But one could read the inscription 'Fides et Patria' up front.
