The Real Deal

Drop your shoes with the shoe man and wander around these mosques. You'll see lots of locals studying and sometimes chanting. Huge beautiful rooms and nice courtyards.

Most of the Mosques are not as beautiful as the Catholic Churches. The Mosque and Madrasa of Sultan Hassan is no exception to that. But the inner court is huge and has a special atmosphere. So I think this is the best mosque I have visited in Cairo.

Sultan Hassan mosque off Midan Salah-ad-Din, directly below the Citadel, is a magnificent example of Mamluke architecture with abundant stalactite detailing and intricate artistry. Directly facing the Sultan Hassan mosque is the replica called El-Rifai mosque. Entry fee is LE 40.

You have to pay entrance fees. There are 2 buildings on this site. On the right is the mosque which also acts as a mausoleum for the recent kings and queens of Egypt including King Faruk. There is also a shrine of a sufi saint. The mosque has a large dome and any sound you make makes an echo
