Lovely!

The entire summer palace area is fabulous! Lovely way to spend a few hours. Leave 3 or 4 to see everything. You must climb to the top. It's steep and hard, but worth it!

Facing Kunming Lake, this octagonal shaped building was built onto the mountain side. It is a Buddhist tower and the Empress Dowager Cixi would go there and pray every first and fifteenth day of the lunar month. She must have been very fit as the climb to the top is through many flights of steep stairs. Panoramic views of whole... More

like in the other reviews already mentioned the summer palace itself is overcrowded. Not only on Sundays. On Mondays too! It was a very Sunny day, maybe that's why. The views are lovely. The tower itself is beautiful. And yes you pay a little extra but that keeps the crowds away. Tip: like already mentioned the climb over the stairs... More

It stood on a very steep cliff of Longevity Hill. So it was hard for me to climb up the hill. The Empress Dowager Cixi must have been very fit, as she used to go there to pray and burn incense twice each lunar month. Or, did her servants carry her up the hill?

We visited the Summer palace today and it was unfortunate that the smog was thick. This could not stop us from appreciating the Tower that dominates the Palace. Like the Great Wall yesterday the steps are steep but the view is worth it if you can keep going one step at a time. The commanding presence the tower has I... More

Ok, most people think this IS the summer palace, while it is just the pagoda of the temple. For those who plan to visit it, remember: 1. There is an additional ticket that has to be purchased at the foot of the Longevity Hill. 2. You will have to climb all the stairs to the top. 3. You won't be... More
