This building complex with towering eaves was believed to have been built for Emperor Qianlong's later years after his abdication. The hall was left empty for nearly a century after his death. Empress Dowager Cixi used to receive foreign envoys and enjoy opera performances here. When she died, her coffin was placed here for memorial services.

Classical Chinese architecture at its best? Beautiful structure with nice smaller gate. Excellent photo op. Not so crowded as some of the surrounding site.
