As reviews indicate below, there is an interesting history to the Beijing Friendship Store. This government-operated store used to be a bustling place, where foreigners could buy imported goods and daily requirements and a huge variety of interesting Chinese arts and crafts. It was one of the few places foreigners could even shop in Beijing. As the country opened up,... More

I have been going to the Beijing Friendship Store since 2002 when it was one of the few places you could get Western food. Dont think i ever shopped in the actual 'Friendship' part before but took a stroll thru a few times because it always had interesting things that were quite high quality. On a lark this weekend went... More

If you're in this neighborhood -- perhaps visiting Ritan Park or the newer Silk Market, both just blocks away -- it's worth strolling over to the Friendship Store just to imagine what it used to be like when it was opened. As I understand it, these stores were designed by Soviet architects and opened in the early 60's. At one... More

Food was served a a large round table with a huge lazy Susan in the middle. Dishes, mostly vege type were placed to be shared by all at the table. One glass of beer or coke was served, if you want more you have to pay for each refill. After eating there is a large indoor market of jewelry, souvenirs,... More

Not worth a visit - used to be a special place but no longer. Now just another shopping centre, has lots its soul and is overpriced.

They make and sell Cloisonne here. Seemed expensive, though they would barter. They have a descent restaurant here. It was very crowded. This would probably be a good stop for seniors, but not teenagers or kids

Stay out of these places. If your guide tries to take you to them, resist. They say they're official government stores, and they give a "fair price." Hence, no bartering. We fell for it and later on found the same thing we bought selling for 80% less in town.
