I went here last year for the second time part of the reserve is run by WWF and an other part is open to scientists. WWF are professional in what they do, and if you know a scientist who can gain access to the boardwalk that is excellent. The site is surrounded by shrimp farms and is a classic area... More

Very knowledgeable and entertaining guide Sze Man took us around the wetlands. We were lucky to see a rare Siberian Crane amongst many other beautiful and rare birds. Highly recommend. Booking in advance required.

Booked a tour with Hong Kong birdwatching tours. Mai Po was a great place. Lots of waders and forest birds as well. A lot of walking involved but it is all flat and very easy . The walk out to the tidal flats was scary for me . It's a floating boardwalk with only one handrail . So if you... More

This is a great place to see birds of all types. We had just missed main migration, but saw avocets, stilts, herons, black faced spoonbills, kites, and many small sparrows and warblers. The preserve is pretty small but because it is surrounded by Hong Kong and Shenzhen, the birds congregate here. There area a few stairs down to a long... More

One of the benefits of fog is that it concentrates your viewing and cuts out buildings. The weather forecast was correct; it would be cloudy most of the day with rain later. We were disappointed not to see Black Faced Spoonbills, but an Avocet night herons and the white (pied) wagtail were welcome spottings. The Grebe was also a fine... More

Refer to the detailed review of the Mai Po Marshes by Highland Birder (Title: One of the Top Birding Spots in the World"). He already covers the reserve in great detail so here are my additional logistical notes: 1. My Lonely Planet guide said there are weekend guided tours but did not say you MUST be part of a tour... The place is not as hard to get to if you get a cab. We got a green cab from Sheung Shui MTR to Mai Po Nature Reserve office, it cost HKD70 and only about 15 mins. The cab driver was fast and knew the location, so it was good. There are a lot of cabs right outside the MTR... More

This is a WWF preserve and you MUST reserve from outside of Hong Kong to be allowed in (allow two months for reservation process). It is about 1.5 hours from Hong Kong travel time. Lovely and quiet with many different paths available. We saw about 6 species of birds even without binoculars. If you can get there in migration season... More

What an amazing place. If you like bird watching this is a must see location. Shrimp farms; lakes; bird hides; boardwalks; visitor centre. We were lucky enough to visit with a scientist and entered the area beyond the fencing through the mangrove swamps and to the mud flats. Never having seen anything like this before it surpassed my expectations form... More
