Ramayana Ballet, performed at Purawisata Yogyakarta, Indonesia is a perfect place to watch Ramayana Ballet. Only 4 minutes from Malioboro Street.

It has been staged regularly every night since 1976 and it has received an award from Indonesian Record Museum (MURI). It also has been performed at Open Air Stage (only will moved to Indoor if it rains).

The Ramayana ballet/ show in the city centre, indoors, only has 1 fixed priced of 300 IDR, compared to the show ticket price if seen at Prambanan where there are three different price brackets at least to choose from. The venue itself was good but no backdrop of the temple ofcourse. Lovely courtyard area and friendly staff. My key criticism is... More

The ballet tells the age old story of love conquering all: in this case, that of Sinta and Rama. You can pick up a synopsis, which helps, although I did not think it was that clear where we always were in the tale. Sometimes it is better just to let yourself enjoy the moment and not worry too much about... More

Beautiful ballet. Incredible costumes and dance. It was nice that they gave a printout in English (other languages as well) to walk us through what was happening in the story. Cost $30 for the show. You can have buffet dinner and show, however, we opted to eat elsewhere.

Like the Kecak Dance in Bali, the Ramayana Ballet is a top level cultural event in Yogyakarta. It tells the same tale, the story of Rama and Sita, with music and dance. It is loud, spectacular and entertaining. Usually it is an open air event with the Prambanan Temples as the backdrop. However, when we were there, it rained (heavily),... More

Thanks to staff of the ballet office for booking the ticket just by email request. It is the best representation of jawanies culture and tradition. Light and sound effects were great and so as story telling . Play is not every night so check website and plan your visit accordingly.

Though the Indonesian population is predominantly Muslim now (except for Bali that remains predominantly Hindu), there is a strong affinity to the earlier Hindu past that dominated the region right from the first Century AD till 16th Century AD. Sanskrit words are liberally incorporated in Bhasa Indonesia and ancient Hindu Epics of Ramayana and Mahabharata are very popular. Enactment of... More

I had bought my ticket at the info centre in yogya and was told that it would be inside due to the raining season. I checked with another source too who also confirmed this. I went to prabanan temple earlier which shut down at 5 pm. I had waited over 2 hours for the ballet show. Very few people could... More

We were lucky enough for our guide to explain the story before. It made it so much easier to understand. So do read up before. We had seats right on the front. There are no backs to the seats but they give you a cushion. I should have put the cushion on the floor and rested against the seat. The performance was... More

First of all: there are two Ramayana Ballets in Yogykarta and this one is the most amateur of the two. We thought we were booking tickets for the indoor ballet (rainy season) at Prambanan Temple online and ended up with tickets for here--the system is confusing and honestly we felt mislead by the time we realized what had happened and...
