A dance performance of the classic epic Ramayana about the fortunes of Prince Rama. Preceded by a dinner of the type "all you can eat". Anyway .. the food of a long buffet was moderate (satay ayam was tasty), desserts a bit of a laughingstock. The dance performance was nice but lacked, except for a single dancer, the sophistication of Javanese traditional dance. We were just disappointed.

The staff, the waiter is the best part, w good service I have nothing to say, but the buffet wasnt really that special, not delightful but can be better. The cultural show was remarkable, especially the gamelan music. The floor should better be mopped and clean so the performers don't messed their costumes w dirt, and so they can have clean toes. Twas a good experience nonetheless.

Do not miss this show, I enjoyed the Ramayana show in a crisp format, the actors did a superb performance and the musicians too performed equally well. I have seen indoor due to rains and I am sure outdoors will a great fun. The lighting direction are superb.

This is a pretty harsh review compared to most on here, but my experience here was truly a black spot during my extended trip in Indonesia. My party paid $50 USD to see the show-- a pretty large sum for our budget, but we heard the ballet should not be missed. However, when we got there, there was some sort of music festival going on in the complex because I could hear western rock music leaking over into our amphitheater for a good portion of the performance, especially in the beginning. Very off-putting when trying to see a cultural show. The show itself was just so-so, and I could tell even from my seat far back the musicians were bored and unengaged. By the end of the show, my party was sleepy and unimpressed. And man, those concrete seats are uncomfortable, even with cushions, making the nearly two hour show pretty tiresome to sit through.

However, what truly made this a terrible experience was that even though my hotel had called in advance for us to see the show and I saw that name place cards had been made for my party to seat us in the very front and center (my name is spelled very uniquely, so there was no mistaking those seats were for us), the staff nonetheless directed my party to sit in the very back. The quality of the show was definitely impacted by this change in seating. More bafflingly, I could not understand why they sat us in the back even though the entire amphitheater was practically empty AND the other people who had come with us were seated much closer to the front. I have a vague feeling this is because my party was all of non-white descent (it was common throughout my trip to be mistaken for a local), and compared to the other not-brown folks in our tour group, I certainly felt like I was being given the short end of the stick because of the color of my skin.

Would not recommend, especially if you are a traveller of color.

InTripadvisor the people have confused two different showes. In fact, in the city close to the Sultan Palace is one of the ballets and another is away close to the Baraboduri temple. The ballet in the city is pure commercial. My husband is a musician and he was very frustrated, even the Gamelan orcestra was not an orcestra but just the band and the dancers are alternating amateurs (as one local told later). While the fare is senselessly expensive and adventure is not worth the price.

We enjoyed the opportunity to see the performance and get to know the traditional story of Ramayana. However, the technical rendition was not perfect, e.g. the dancers sometimes lacked synchronisation. It is important to read the mythical story before attending the performance, as it would be rather hard to understand without any prior background.

Though the Indonesian population is predominantly Muslim now (except for Bali that remains predominantly Hindu), there is a strong affinity to the earlier Hindu past that dominated the region right from the first Century AD till 16th Century AD. Sanskrit words are liberally incorporated in Bhasa Indonesia and ancient Hindu Epics of Ramayana and Mahabharata are very popular. Enactment of a part of Ramayana in form of a beautiful ballet in the heart of Yogyakarta is therefore not to be missed. The ballet is held every day in the evening from 8 PM till 9.30 PM and has been held daily without break for last 35 years or so. It is on the Guinness Book of Records for that reason. Ramayana is a long epic depicting the story of Rama the ancient king in pre-historic India that has been dated to anywhere between 3000 to 7000 BC. The Epic authored by Valmiki comprises about 10,000 Sanskrit verses (Mahabharata Epic written by Vyasa is bigger at 100,000 shlokas and is the biggest epic known to humanity). The Ramayana ballet in Yogyakarta covers a short middle part of the story. The ballet starts with the abduction of Rama’s wife Sinta (Sita in Sanskrit) by the demon king Rawana and the final killing of Rawana by Lord Rama, and his reunion with Sinta. The venue itself is beautiful and the ballet is held in a covered auditorium where there is a free seating except for high paying foreigners who are seated in the front central rows. Entry ticket is steeply priced at Indonesian Rupiah 300,000 that is about US$23, but is well its worth. Locals pay 110,000 rupiah for entry. You can buy a combo ticket to include a dinner that precedes the ballet by paying an additional 120,000 Rupiah. If you are not familiar with the story of Ramayana, please read a short write-up of the ballet that is provided at the entry. The ballet itself is beautifully rendered to the music and singing by live artists sitting besides the main stage. At the end, you get a photo opportunity with the cast of the ballet. The performance is a must-watch.

Very entertaining, a beautiful rendering of the Induist legend about love, jalousy and fights... and with the "white monkey"...
I went several times, the show changes very often...but the basics are ther and enjoyable. The dinner before the show is OK, but you do not go to Yogya nor to Indonesia for gastrnonomy, don't you ?

Saw the Ramayana at Purawisata, had the dinner + ballet combo. Pickup from the hotel was arranged by Purawisata staff (nice bonus) and dinner was buffet style - a decent selection of Indonesian food served from 630pm till 8pm.

The ballet was beautifully performed. First of all, the stage was cleverly designed to allow the actors to enter from several different areas, with the gamelan players on stage right. Lighting was utilised very cleverly throughout the performance, the narrator/singer sang soulfully in javanese (thankfully we were provided with a summary of the story beforehand and could understand the ballet being performed)

Dancers did a great job of conveying the story of Sinta's abduction by Rahwana, however got a bit worried by the little children (some as young as 2-4 yrs old) playing the parts of the monkeys - they were climbing the walls and walking around on the fences and roofs, we were scared that they'd fall off!
