Good birding area

Visited Iwahig for the morning specifically for birding, some good walks and forest trails. Had no problem getting access to the area.

what struck me is the management of the farm and the prisoners. they are given another chance to showcase their talent it to people and hopefully their families. we met some prisoners who entertained us with their welcome dance. later, we went around the old building that housed their products - paintings, hand made souvenir items and t-shirts. some of... the inmates roam around freely. Some, perhaps all, have jobs. Planting vegies, caring for the animals running a store etc. Ther are a number of animals running around. I saw cows, chickens, goats, dogs, cats.

The Iwahig prison and penal farm is an interesting alternative to the many island hopping tours offered in the Philippines. We went there by tricycle and spoke to some inmates who were very friendly. Bring some money to buy Filipino souvenirs and fruit to support the prisoners.

This is an open prison that is apparently much desired by prisoners in the Philippines because of the lovely surroundings and the fact that they can live there with their wife and family. It is around 40 minutes away by bus from Puerto Princesa, in the middle of the countryside, and the inmates undertake farming duties such as rice growing... More

Get a tricycle or van to take you there and you can freely wander around after a small admission fee. It's so interesting and fun meeting the prisoners, expect a small dance performance and lots of harassment to buy cigarettes for the prisoners (they ate not pushy though). Make sure to head out to the nearby swimming area afterwards ☺

a dreadful one hour drive by tricycle to get there from Puerto, 2,400 prisoners, 150 max security, 1,000+ medium and the rest minimum. You only meet the medium who are generally 20 years plus inmates, drugs, murder etc. Seemed like really nice guys, but ... no walls but shot on sight if they escape, very few try it, no real... We rented an automatic scooter from puerto (400p) and went there on our own. About a 40 minute drive. At Iwahig we spoke to several people with long to live sentences for murder and other heavy crimes. Very interesting and touching stories sometimes. (Won't wrote them here, go find out for yourself, worth it!) They are happy to see people... More

This was a awesome place to visit. The inmates put on a matinee performance for us & they had handmade wares for sale of good quality & they offered shoulder & hand massages. I didn't know what to expect but this is a truly well run unusual prison. A positive eye opening prison that other prisons could learn a lot... More
