This is the second largest lake in South America. There is a bike path around most of it. You can also take public transportation to see different sections. We based in Puerto Varas and took the bus to Friutillar (bajo) one day and did a...More

Views are amazing from anywhere around the lake. Great restaurants and hotels. Great way to know the culture in this area. The views of the mountains are incredible. The area is known for its cattle and dairy. I recommend trying a streak and the cheeses.

The lake is amazing, one of the three largest lakes in South America. Just take care about the weather, because foggy days can encover its beauty.

Lake Llanquihue is in southern Chile's Lake District and is known for its vast waters (860 sq.km.) and black-sand shores. Visited on 2/04/2017. There was a light fog that limited views of the distant shores but by afternoon it had cleared and we could view...More

Low cloud obscured the tops of the volcanos while we were staying in Puerto Varas but driving around the lake was still beautiful & it was interesting to hear the history of the area & learn about the salmon industry.

This is a magical part of the world. Despite cloudy, cold weather the lake remains beautiful, the magnificent volcano standing guard like a sentinel. Could return time and time again.

We walked thru town to the lake. There we found a great view of the volcano on the other side of the lake. We saw people swimming in the lake.

The lake is worth a visit for the sweeping views and volcano. Puerto Varas itself is a touristy town with lots of shops and cafes, but the lake is definitely the star of the show. We were fortunate to be here on crisp sunny day...More

We went from Puerto Varas to Frutillar by bus which was quick and cheap. Once in Frutillar we had a lovely walk around the town side of the lake. It was very peaceful there almost out of season, with the volcano Osorno offering up most...More

If we arrive at Puerto Varas by air (and do not want to rent a car), are there tour boats and/or tour buses that offer excursions around the lake and other points of interest? Thanks, Jennifer

Yes, there are. You would arrive at Puerto Montt Airport and get transportation to Puerto Varas. You can check with your hotel if they arrange for airport pickups. We rented a car and were really happy to have it. More... More
