Chilean food is all about fresh fish and shellfish, and to see it all on display you have to spend time at the Mercado Central. Half the building is stalls bursting with just-caught seafood at what seem like very reasonable prices. Around the edge of the area with the stalls are privately operated little restaurants that a lot of the... More

This may not be a great place to buy food, as may not be very clean, as we saw cats on the stalls etc, but the building is interesting and people watching is great. For a tourist who is looking around Santiago and will be close by, for the other attractions, this is worth it.

If you want to see and SMELL an authentic fish market this is worth a visit. Just wandering around the passageways you can see the array of fresh products available particularly fish. It is very touristy so prepare to be tempted into the numerous fish restaurants in the market, although not all great but the fish is fresh. I recommend... More

This place is terrible. I am not talking about the history of the place or anything like this because it has its importance. The fact is, the place stinks, it is really a fish and seafood market. All the place looks very dirty. About the food, unfortunately, besides the fact that it is very overpriced, it was not good al... More

The architecture is beautiful and has an interesting history. Fun to see all the fish and watch locals haggle over the prices. The open restaurant features waiters every few feet asking you to sit down and eat. I ate there twice. The first time I ordered a seafood stew. What arrived looked like oatmeal and if there was seafood in... More

My wife, my daughter, my grandchild and I went to the Central Market in December 2016. It is primarily a fish market and, as expected, it was fishy smelling and a bit dirty. We wound through narrow aisles and looked at all of the fresh fish. We finally ended up in the center of the market which is a big... More

It is a historical monument with more than 144 years old The prices of... More

This is a fish market that has many wonderful restaurants for lunch as everything closes at 5PM. The only problem is since this is a fish market the smell can be a bit over powering at times. In my opinion this is must place to go at least once and enjoy lunch with the locals. I can't remember the name... More

Walking around the outside of the market as well as the inside was fun and provided a great place to eat not only traditional empenadas, but seafood. An old traditional bar where you can get a hurricane (the drink) is close by.
