Some of the best Panama hats are made here in Cuenca. The small museum is also interesting. Prices are both reasonable and expensive, depends what you want.

This is the most well known and most pretigious brand for the tradicional summer hats made of PAJA TOQUILLA an smal palm three tipical of coastal middle-america . They have nice models and colors but not in all sizes and not all ready to buy...More

The location is a bit off the beaten track, but worth the price of a cab. The tour is short and quite interesting. The showroom is very busy with a nice selection of hats finished on-site.

We took a taxi out to the factory as it was a bit too far to walk and we felt we couldn't leave Cunca without visiting the factory of the man who popularised/invented the Panama hat. Interesting to see how the hats were made, although...More

I planned to visit the museum and workshop, but only had a quick look at the empty workshop - apparently I visited too late in the day. The shop has every style of Ortega hat on display, and the sales people were very friendly and...More

Probably the best place to buy genuine paja toquilla hats — "Panama" is a misnomer, no thanks to Teddy Roosevelt. Prices range from affordable US$ 50 hats to $1,000 and higher for the most refined tight weave. There is also a very informative 'museum' demonstrative...More

I vowed I wouldn't buy a hat, but of course I did. Interesting to see how they're made; surprising how affordable they are!

There are many places to see and buy Panama hats in Cuenca, but this place is the real deal. All steps of the process of creating a hat, once the base is delivered to them from the weavers, take place here and it is fascinating....More

Panama hats don't come from Panama they come from Ecuador, and mainly from Homero Ortega. What a fascinating way to spend an hour or so. We were allowed to wander around and ask questions pretty much at will. The whole process is there to be...More

We took a tour through this fascinating facility and learned how the panama hat got its name even though the hats are made in Ecuador. They are still made by hand but there are many, many colors and styles available as well as they original...More

We went around 9:30 AM they either gave us a special tour or we hit it perfectly. Be sure to buy a hat if you even think you want one or want to give one. In the states they are $75 at least and there they are 25-35, they... More
