We visited Machu Picchu and the Huayna Picchu mountain. Someone recommended us to pass by the moon temple on the descent of Huayna Picchu. We regretted it!!! The moon temple and gran cavernas is nice to see but not really stunning. The detour is really heavy (very steep descent, and then walk up again to go back to Machu Picchu).... More

Obviously, planning is key to visiting here. We toured with Gate One out of Pennsylvania. It's a long day -- and I'd suggest a few months of step training -- to get here. The place has a spiritual vibe, great views and is a physically rewarding climb. Mind-blowing history.

Part of the ruins site at Machu Picchu. Well preserved (good resting spot also). Worth the trek, if physically able.

While taking a somewhat backseat to the more popular Sun Temple, the Moon Temple is none the less inspiring for it's stonework and for the effort that it took to create it. Certainly impressive as part of the overall Machu experience !

How to find the moon temple: When you reach the top of the Huyana Picchu, follow the sign that says, "Gran Caverna" (about an hour). Alternatively, there's an unmarked path that diverges to the left as you ascend Huyana Picchu. This path is shorter, and if you take the alternative route back up, you can still see the top of... There is a great story behind all of the attractions in Machu Picchu. Don't walk it without a guide or a good guide book, as the history is super interesting.

Half the fun of the Moon Temple is the walk there! The carved steps and pathways that take you to the isolated and quiet spot are worth every exertion of effort. Just watch your step as some of those stairs are rather steep and sharp... Once you get there, the silence is absolute and stunning. You look down the hills... More
