It is located on the only hill that Montevideo has. They say that Montevideo is the name because a Portuguese sailor saw a hill and said: MONTE VI DE EU. That means I see a hill. It a tourist attraction.

Not really easy to get there by yourself, but there are several tours including the Cerro in their route. It's a great view of the city from there is a piece oh historical site.

The Fortaleza del Cerro (aka: General Artigas) is located over the highest elevation (132-134 meters above sea level) in Montevideo. The outside and inside area of the fortress itself is well taken care; the museum is very basic. The best part of visiting the Fortaleza on a sunny day is the view of the bay and some of the buildings that... Four of us (ages 53-69) were attacked by three males ranging from about 12 to 35 around 1:15 pm. Two of them beat my friend with rocks (puncturing her head) and broke her purse. She held on to the purse and fought back by hitting and kicking. Her husband had a gun pointed at his face so he threw some... More

Friends who live in Montevideo drove me up to the fort on a Sunday afternoon. Admittance charge was 30UYU or about $1 U.S. Well worth the price of admission. The museum is not large but has a very nice collection of firearms. Some are in desperate need of cleaning and preservation. Many are incorrectly labeled. Over all if interested in... More

The view is fantastic but avoid the back streets, this is a rough neighborhood and we got a handbag snatched. Maintain situational awareness at all times, and if you want to come here, consider booking a taxi instead of using bus. The view is amazing, and if you are careful its worth doing.

Nice view of the city but in a bad part of town. Safe to go weekends during the day but circulate only on main streets. The view is impressive, the museum is well kept but not spectacular and the indications are only in Spanish. There is a small admission ticket. There are no services which is a shame as a... More

Cerro is my favourite place to go in Montevideo on my bike. It's a bit of a tricky ride from central Montevideo, about 20km with a bit of motorway to negotiate, but when you get there you get a treat of a view back over Montevideo to the east and out towards Santiago Vasquez to the west. You can easily... More

I visited the place, but not sure you can visit the fortress itself. it is the highest point near Montevideo, you can see all city from there, mainly the port and surrounding riverside. Nice to visit
