Overview
More
Bascarsija is Sarajevo's old bazaar and the historical and cultural center of the city. Bascarsija was built in the 15th century when Isa-Beg Isakovic founded the town. The word Bascarsija derives from the Turkish language. The word "bas" which is "bas" in Turkish literally means "head", in some contexts however also "primary", "main", "capital" and "carsija" which is "carsi" in Turkish means "bazaar" or "market". Due to the large fire in the 19th century, today Bascarsija is half the size that it once was. Bascarsija is located on the north bank of the river Miljacka, in the municipality of Stari Grad. On Bascarsija there are several important historic buildings, such as the Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque and sahat-kula. Today Bascarsija is the major tourist attraction of Sarajevo.

This is a soul of Sarajevo, something like a main square and entrance to the old part of the city, full of restaurants and small bars typical for Bosnian culture.

Typical example of Ottoman heritage, it drops you into past and think history can write amazing stories. I would recommend it everyone and it's one of top destinations in city! And don't forget to try traditional Bosnian food while exploring Bascarsija.

Very beautiful walk. Many cafes here - my only complaint is that most allow smoking inside. A must visit in Sarajevo.

#1 on my Sarajevo must-see list... such a fascinating and complex wee neighbourhood with lanes, alleys, nooks & crannies - something new to discover around each corner. Food, drink, handicrafts, architecture, and history. Splendid! Don't miss it!

The roads around this area were under construction. I visited by the rental car, so it was hard work to find the path. Be careful!
