This monument is a stone throw from the Cathedral and well worth the very short wall. The monument is quite striking and imposing in the small park that surrounds it. An important piece of history shown in three impressive statues. Top tip: from the Cathedral...More

Typical Soviet era war memorial to commemorate their "liberation" of Sofia from the Nazis in WW2. Worth a visit for sure, particularly if you have an interest in WW2.

A Soviet soldier flanked by a woman and a man on top of a huge column. At the base reliëfs that depict the armed struggle against the Nazis and their collaborators. In front of the monument at the northern side of the park more refiefs...More

Having a monument to the Soviet Army may seem a bit weird in Bulgaria, but it works, and the citizens are quick to point out that it is part of their history.

The monument shows some damage - hands and parts of rifles are missing - but it is impressive and the park is lively on a weekend night. We enjoyed people watching and a free concert.

Large structure in a small park that is near the university. The smaller statues near the base of the monument are more representative of the Soviet era. There are nice views towards the mountains.

It's always difficult to judge a monument that is so divisive. Do you rate the monument itself or what it stands for? Personally, I think it's a fantastic piece of work - a large pedestal bedecked with a Soviet soldier and Bulgarians, which looms over...More

According to my Communist Tour guide, the Bulgarians built this monument to the Soviet Army even though they didn't do much. According to the guide, he stated no Soviet army soldiers died during WWII. Now, you will find this is a place that young people...More
