If you go to any of Kiev's stunning churches, this one is worth a trip. The bell tower climb alone is worth the entry fee. The highlight though is walking into St Sophia itself. The dimly lit interior is something out of a movie. The cathedral construction started close to a 1000 years ago. Inside, where you can't take photos... More

Very photogenic cathedral. The frescos were pretty. The location of Saint Sophia is very central, and is a very easy walk from Maidan Nezalezhnosti.

Saint Sophia is equally beautiful as Pechersk Lavra and has also a very rich and interesting history. I recommend a guided tour in order to understand the history of the cathedral, of the 11th century frescoes and pay attention to outstanding details which matter - like the massive silver shrine, which is the most beautiful shrine I have ever see.... A masterpiece built from stone, better preserved than Haghia Sophia in Istanbul (though a lot smaller too). Still the height of some 29m and the manyfold pillars allow for some fascinating pictures (if you can avoid the guards ;-). The preservation of the murals is excellent - one cannot help to be deeply moved by this about 1000 year old... More

Absolutely mesmerising. I've seen a lot of churches and temples on a lot of cities, don't think I've enjoyed any as much as this. Enchanting on the outside, absorbing and atmospheric on the inside. Reminds me of Haghia Sofya in Istanbul but without the crowds. Climb to the top for a beautiful view of Kiev. So serene and majestic, we... More

Lots to see inside with many paintings on the walls and ceilings. Lots of arches like in Byzantium style, however no photography allowed. Amazing inside. The bell tower is a bit of a climb but well worth the view from the top.

The cathedral is a must-see for anyone visiting Kyiv. It's a very beautiful structure with wonderful architecture, both from the outside and inside. The view from the inside, when going to the top of the towers is majestic.

The territory is ticket based but it's well worth it. Also - get a ticket to climb the bell tower, you'll get amazing views from there. In front of this church you'll see Xmas & New Year fair & the main Ukrainian Xmas tree, starting from spring there will be many art festivals, exhibitions & other interesting events here.
