- Inspired2Guildford, United Kingdom421 contributionsGorgeous viewsPeaceful place high above San Salvador. Road gets very busy at weekends so good driving skills are essential. Can go up by local bus but doesn't go all the way to the top so it's about a mile walk to the national park. great views into the crate and over the city. locals charge $2 to park at side of road.Visited January 2023Written 14 January 2023
- Jeff KPittsburgh, Pennsylvania1,897 contributionsEnjoyable ParkIt takes about a 10 minute hike up a hill to the first viewing sight to see the crater. You then return on a different path with a few more viewing spots. The views are good and the park is well maintained. There is also a viewing spot at the bottom of the park where you can see San Salvador. I was a little disappointed in this spot as several trees blocked parts of the view. The drive to get to the park might be better than the park itself. The last mile or so is very tight with lots of restaurants and businesses on a very narrow road. There are several spots with great views on the road. It takes some effort to get there but is worthwhile if you have access to a car.Visited January 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 January 2023
- LuckyFairfax, Virginia13 contributionsOasis close to San SalvadorVisited El Salvador for the first time in 20 years, it was fun to go back here. Park is much improved with better signs and paths leading up to the crater. Beautiful and quiet and clean. Now there are vendors along the rim which sell souvenirs and food, personally don’t think they are needed since there is also those stalls at the bottom and it’s literally like a 5-7 minute walk up to the rim. Other than that, a great oasis close to the capital.Visited August 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 11 August 2023
- Orr R14 contributionsBeautiful volcano and crater, substandard operations of the slide attractionBeautiful green space and a magnificent volcano and crater with good restaurants. The Boquerón Slide is very manually operated and only less than 15 inner tubes used at a time and if the wait line is long, one could get stuck there for hours on end. As the people go down in their inner tubes, then about 15-20 minutes to haul the inner tubes back to the top of the slide and only 15 people go down and the the process starts again of hauling. Not a good process. And it takes the fun out of itVisited November 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 17 November 2023

This natural area is nice to walk. You’re under the canopy of trees for the majority of the hike so bring bug spray. Otherwise, to get to the look out, you need to hike up quite a few stairs to get to the first view point. Our day was hazy so the crater wasn’t clear but we could still see it. It’s not a long trek but bring good shoes and some water.

El Salvador is a lovely country. Because of its history, many might not consider traveling there. It has a lush, tropical vibe and the beaches are fabulous. Lots of nice restaurants too.

The highlight of Parque El Boqueron is the second crater of Volcan San Salvador known as Boqueron (Big Mouth). The interesting thing about this crater is that it has a secondary crater within it which resulted form an eruption in 1917 thus my title ‘crater in a crater’.
To get here you must get transport to the top of San Salvador Volcano. This is a bit of a long and winding road. We had private transportation as part of a larger tour of the city. I did note a public bus near to the top of this mountain but cannot recall the number. There is a small limited parking area at the top. Entrance is 2USD for foreigners and 1USD for locals. After going through the gate there is a short, unchallenging upwards hike to the viewpoint over the craters. While on this walk one is afforded a pleasant experience in nature with wild hummingbirds. There are numerous restaurants with panoramic views of the city that could be stopped at on the road coming down off the mountain.
Overall its a great use of half a day and a decent nature break from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Great place for a day trip out of the city. Quite a drive to get there but the hike up to the crate is worth the amazing views. It’s moderate to medium hike. Trail is pretty steep and the stapes are pretty uneven and old. But the views at the top amazing. Also increase in elevation it is a bit cooler up on the volcano. Lots of booths and a few restaurants at the parking lot. Admission was two dollars us for oforeigners. Best spent entire trip.

Wonderful experience. Rode an Uber up to the top. Make sure you arrange for your driver to wait since there is no cell service at the top of the volcano. Better yet invite him to hike with you as we did. It is a short mildly strenuous hike from the parking lot to the several overlooks at the top providing amazing views of San Salvador Volcano. We spent 30-40 minutes hiking. The drive up to Boqueron is also quite spectacular with great views of the city of San Salvador. There are also many restaurants and cafes along the way and at the top to grab a bite or a drink and shopping opportunities at the top with vendors selling souvenirs and locally made goods.

I went with ECTOURS owner Edwin and our guide was Estefany..we only did the stairs to the viewing spots but I do know that they do a tour where you can hike down..I think it takes about 4-5 hours? Maybe depends on your skills. Sorry I couldn't help you out more.

Boa viagem!

Is there any way to get there by public transportation?
If no, how much do I expect to pay for a taxi ride from San Salvador?

For what you'd pay for a cab you might as well do a tour that will pay close you up at your hotel and explain what you're seeing on the way.
I highly recommend Nahuat tours
