History Lives Within This Magical City
Casco Viejo,Spanish for Old Quarter, (also known as Casco Antigua & San Filipe), has rightfully been designated as a World Heritage Site. This charming, Old World city has been influenced by several cultures, and boasts architecture in Colonial, Art Deco & Antillean styles, among others. Interesting, diverse buildings & ruins, with numerous fine dining options available. My husband and I greatly enjoyed our 4 day stay within this magical city, exploring the plazas, museum, cathedral and streets, with historical points of interest throughout its confines. Not only a must visit, try to stay within the lovely and lively Casco Viejo for an exceptional treat.

    Really Nice Historical Walking Tour
Great walking tour. The area is being gentrified into a safe and walking tourist attraction. Beautiful architecture, clean streets, great shopping for souvenirs, and good food. We downloaded a walking tour guide and did the entire area without taking a paid tour or hiring a guide. The historical sites and street signs are clearly marked. The site markers explained the historical significance of each site. There is security on almost every major intersection directing traffic. We Ubered down for about 8.00 from the hotel.

Nice place to walk around and experience the Casco Viejo atmosphere
Nice place to walk around and to look for houses and visit church and cathedral. Good view on the Skyline of Panama City as well. The streets are rather narrow, several places where one can drink or eat s.th.. Personal highlight was a visit to the Panama Museum, on the left side of the Cathedral.

    Loved Casco Viejo
Casco Viejo is a wonderful mixture of history, museums and chic restaurants. You can wander through the side streets and dart in and out of shops. There are wonderful hotels and great restaurants tucked away. Lots of indigenous art. Definitely a must for Panama City. The Canal Museum is one of the best ever.

    Beautiful historical area
This is the old town of Panama city, and is well worth a visit, with very well preserved, or restored old buildings. The area is full of restaurants, bars, and shops. It is well patrolled and safe to walk a boat. From certain points, you can see the ships lined up to enter the canal. They are lovely old church ruins. I have visited many old areas in south, and Central America and I would rate this excellent. The modern Panama City is full of high-rise buildings many of them quite ugly. It is surprisingly large and spread out.

Nice place to stay and visit
Nice place with lots of places to eat and drink. Friendly people. Nice Christmas decoration and a lot of Christmas lights. Big parking spot around the bay. We stayed here almost a week.

    Well maintained world heritage
We visited this unesco world heritage site as a part of our tour of the old city. It was impressive and well restored. Many of the churches were beautifully maintained. There were also nativity scenes which were really huge. Must do in Panama City

    Beautiful!
Beautiful old city. There are tons of restaurants and shops to enjoy. But also take some time to just stroll through the old city and enjoy the architecture and the beautiful restorations. We strolled along many empty streets after dinner just enjoying the scenery. Very different from the rest of Panama City.

    Must See!
Do not miss seeing this part of history....a real jewel of Panama City. Has the feel of Spain. Watch the sidewalks....some steep drop downs and could be difficult for the elderly. Wish we had more time to spend here.

We spent 6 days in Casco Viejo during our time in Panama. It is a nice area with quite a few beautiful buildings, a wide variety of shops, some great restaurants and coffee shops, the Panama Canal Museum and plenty of old churches to visit. The streets are clean and safe and the neighbors are friendly. Prices are higher than some other parts of Panama but you get a nice atmosphere in return. I’d recommend staying here but, if you are housed elsewhere, it’s a great place to visit.

This is the historical district and it is certainly worth a visit. In contrast, downtown Panama City is "all business", mostly all skyscrapers, and very little for a tourist to do.

Water is expensive (for water). In the heat of March (when we were there) we drank water like crazy. If you plan to stay for a while get to the El Machetazo supermarket where you can buy water (or other grocery items) much less expensively.

I highly recommend staying at the Hotel Central. It elegant without being too formal, located near tour agencies, restaurants and several musems. The staff is stellar. In particular, Alanys, a server in the dining room for the breakfast buffet, was exceptional--very attentive without being cloying, patient with my elementary Spanish and always cheerful to see me. I'm sure the Hotel Central management recognize her potential and will nuture her career in hospitality. No less friendly and attentive were Josalyn and Walter. Great assets to the hotel staff!! In addition, Josue, my guia and driver did a wonderful job.

As a (memorable) feature of our year-long celebration marking 40 years of marriage, Laurie and I spent seven glorious days at Casa Cayuco (Bocas del Toro - separately reviewed). Our final three days were passed in Panama City (Casco Viejo). Our accomodation was in the historic Central Hotel, facing Independence Square and within steps of the Museo del Canal (with its extensive exhibition covering the French and American eras of canal construction). There's lots of cute, narrow streets to explore, swank cocktail bars atop buildings, good eating venues, venerable churches, and views toward the Pacific mouth of the canal with ships in line, standing off shore, awaiting their passage through the isthmus. Looking north from Casco Viejo, over the bay, is another world: a great confluence of modern high rise buildings, a big bow toward Panama's more recent commercial/financial wealth; a striking contrast with the older French and Spanish style buildings that at one time constituted the entirety of Panama City.

Nice place to visit with plenty of restaurants and shops, but very touristy and crowded at times. Be aware that depending on the time of day, you may be stuck in traffic

A beautiful old town but it’s so busy to get around in a car and there is a rough neighborhood near by with police on every corner
Don’t spend too much time here just an afternoon
