The centre of Skopje is filled with larger than life statues. They often appear out of proportion and too massive. For some their relevance for FYR Macedonia's history is a little far fetched.

This is, in my mind's eye, the best main square we recently visited. The Warrior on the Horse (wink, wink) is probably there to symbolize Alexander the Great, son of Philip, who are both Macedonian heroes. However, modern day politics, especially relations with Greece, do...More

Do some reasaerch to see what the Square looked like before this ridiculous statue with an even weirder fountain from which you hear classical music!? was placed here. An incredible lack of taste.....and in the most important place in the town...such a shame....

It's hard not to be impressed by the enormous Warrior on a Horse statue (why don't they just simply call it the statue of Alexander the Great?). It dominates Macedonia Square and celebrates the life of one of the world's greatest warriors and the pride...More

WOW this thing is impressive and never ceases to attract a crowd of people from all over the world to take pictures of it. Yes, this is Macedonia's world renowned leader so why shouldn't they have a massive statue of him in the middle of...More

A very ugly statue. If Alexander the Great is part of Macedonia, so be it. Maybe it's a different culture, but I prefer a more subtle approach instead of the sledgehammer of kitsch.

One of the many ugly statues in skopje. This city was so beautiful before the earthquake, i happened to have seen old photos. Now it is a concoction of different styles

It definitely stands out and attracts your eye. The fountain is playful with water spouting from lions and dancing in the pool. The tiled yard has interesting patterns and it begs for a selfie. I score it as average as it is not to be...More

Oh, the statues are great, yes ;-)... The Program for re-building the inner city of skopje was called "Skopje 2014", because it should have been completed in 2014. So, although that didn´t work out, I guess most of it is... More
