Climb on board your personal ATV and head to a local plantation, where you discover the coffee making process from seed to mug. This is a beautiful centrally located shaded park full of vendors which is the good news and bad news. We met here as part of our Blue Planet Tour after a two hour bus ride from our cruise ship docked in Puerto Quetzal. The park is a good jumping off point for a stroll through the city visiting the sites and eating some great local food. The vendors in the park are plentiful, but a bit obnoxious as there are so many and even when you’re in a group they surround you and won’t leave you alone. I recommend a visit to the park as it is shaded and there are places to sit, but be prepared for street vendors all over you!

We stayed 6 days in Antiqua and did a lot of walking around the town. We came across the park on one of our tours the day before Christmas. There weren’t very many people there that day but those who were in the park, wore masks and there were a couple of municipal police officers walking around. We felt very safe. We went back on Christmas Day and the park and surrounding businesses were bustling with families playing, talking and eating together. Everyone was wearing a mask only removing them to eat or drink. What a wonderful atmosphere and beautiful, family culture.

At the old town of "Santiago de los Caballeros" (the actual "Antigua"), the Spanish conquerors built, as they traditionally did in Spain itself and throughout the Americas, a central square. Here, it is known as "Parque Central", or "Plaza Mayor", a major gathering point and focus of social life for its inhabitants and visitors. At its center, the beautiful "Fuente de las Sirenas" ("Fountain of the Mermaids", in English). At its sides, superb colonial structures, such as the "Catedral de San José" (sided by the ruins of the old "Catedral Primada de Santiago de los Caballeros"), the "Palacio Real de los Capitanes Generales" (the former headquarters of the Spanish government for all Central America), the "Palacio del Ayuntamiento" (the City Hall), the "Portal de las Panaderas" (with historic buildings and old houses) and the "Museo de Santiago de los Caballeros" (the local museum). It is impossible to miss "Parque Central" at any visit to Antigua. Famous "Arco de Santa Catalina" and the impressive "Iglesia de la Merced" are just a few steps away. Enjoy!
