First constructed in the 17th century, this church was destroyed by earthquakes and rebuilt many times. What can be seen today are the remains from the last earthquake in 1976.

On the hot afternoon I arrived at La Recoleccion, the shaded park setting was welcomed. The ruins of this monastery clearly showed the devastation of the three sets of earthquakes during the 1700s. Very little is standing, but one can conclude the size if the...More

Definitely a breathtaking site to see and great place for pictures but it cost my wife and I Q80 to get in. There was trash throughout the ruins and just didn't seem worth the money. If you have the extra Q, it's worth the trip...More

This is by far my favorite place in Antigua to play. You can climb on the boulders and ruins and picnic. Be loud whilst walking through the place so as to warn anyone getting frisky to stand up and or put on clothes.

It was a beautiful place to visit, but it needs a good tour guide that explains every detail of what happened and why the city was moved to the new Guatemala City. Very beautiful place and need to go!

La Recoleccion is a massive ancient monastery which was destroyed by earthquake shortly after construction in the early 1700's. Beautiful facades, courtyards and archways remain intact, offering visitors glimpses into the structure's glorious, though short lived past. Another must see in Antigua.

I really enjoyed these ruins. There are massive chunks of old pillars from the church that you climb ov t and on and around. Local families were picnicking out front. The ruins didn't feel placed - felt like this is how they collapsed and hundreds...More

The complex only has a 50 year history before it was destroyed by the major earthquake of 1773. It has been left "in situ" since then. It's only of the few places I have visited that has not been touched by humans trying to clean it...More
