The complex only has a 50 year history before it was destroyed by the major earthquake of 1773. It has been left "in situ" since then. It's only of the few places I have visited that has not been touched by humans trying to clean it up or resurrect it. It's quite an eerie feeling to know that what you see... More

Cool ruins that were very fun to explore. Lots of local families enjoying picnic lunches on the lawn.

This is the perfect place to do a photo-shoot. We did our wedding photo-shoot there and had a great adventure. We also saw a family who had a picnic there which sounded like a good idea as well. It is a great hidden gem in Antigua.

I love that this site hasn't been completely restored - you see much of it as it fell. This visit I enjoyed talking to the guide at the site and watching a bridal photo shoot.

La Recoleccion is an interesting and lesser-visited ruins site to explore, located on the outskirts of Antigua, near the local market. Very little of this former church remains standing and it is almost completely in ruins, due to severe destruction from earthquakes that shook Antigua in the late 1700's. Aside from the stone staircase at the front of the church,... More

There is very little still standing here, but you do get a good sense of the size and majesty of the former church that stood here just by the size of the rubble and the tall walls that remain standing. All of the detail is long, long gone. Strangely, you'll possibly encounter many couples sitting in amongst the ruined alcoves... More

Very nice area to walk around. Uncrowded with a small charge to get in. It was nice to get away from the more busy and touristy areas.

These ruins are probably the most interesting we saw in Antigua; I'm surprised it wasn't busier. It's a little out of the way, past the market, which is maybe why it doesn't get as many visitors. We were there with kids and it was a great place for them to roam.

These ruins are quite nice to explore. Wasn't busy at all. Would be nice place to have picnic. Spend some time exploring the whole grounds.

These ruins are great to walk around and take pictures of. It's an old convent. Popular spot for the locals to have lunch or just chill out in the surroundings! Great for photography!
