Had a great time visiting the Norias. Something uniquely interesting about them and there are a couple of great restaurants on the other side of the lake to enjoy good food and the view. Hope they remain preserved throughout the war and I can visit again someday.

Yes this is the most beautiful thing in my home city Hama and one of the most excited place to visit in Syria where these Noria are distributed all over Al-Assi river

Due to the volatile situation in April, 2011 our tour leader would only let us see these fascinating water wheels and not the city itself or the famous mosque. There had been a killing the previous day during a demonstration, so a quick view of these famous wheels (2 were working) was our only view of the city. They are... More

The wheels where used to provided water to houses and factories along the river but are not working now. The river is extremely polluted and does not flow strongly so the wheels don't turn. They are in the middle of town though and get lit up at night so look nice but better working versions out in the countryside.

Despite what the grumpy reviewer below states, these Norias are well worth a visit and are very old. Very nice by the old mosque. River very polluted, unfortunately!

We only visited the Hama water wheels as it was part of our tour itinery and even then the tour leader tried to talk us out of it, but there is always one person who wants to see everything ... So we get off the bus to look at the water wheel - there is no water and the wheel... More

A welcome stop on route to Palmyra, and an excellent place to have lunch in a fab old villa Aspasia just inside the old city. A local speciality rice in yoghurt served with either chicken or lamb, topped with fried bread is highly recommended. After lunch leaving the Villa, turn left, travel back in time through narrow paved streets with medival style...
